*ZIMSTAT Director General Taguma Mahonde Arrested*

Zimbabwe National Statistics Agency (ZIMSTAT) Director General, Taguma Mahonde has been arrested by the Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission (ZACC) for alleged corruption and corporate malpractices.

ZACC spokesperson Commissioner Thandiwe Mlobane confirmed the development in a telephone interview with Nehanda Radio. She said:

_Director General of Zimbabwe National Statistics Agency, Taguma Mahonde has been arrested by ZACC for fraud. Investigations are still ongoing._

It is alleged that Mahonde bought his service car, a Toyota Land Cruiser, which was originally priced at US$28 000, for only US$300 for the services rendered in three years.

He was also given a Land Rover Discovery which was bought in 2021. As a result, he ended up owning two vehicles in five years which is against principles of good governance.

Mahonde allegedly requested and received school fees allowances in US dollars for the 2023 first term despite that all employees at ZIMSTAT were being paid salaries in Zimbabwe dollars.

He was allegedly working in cahoots with the company’s Finance Director Romania Nyahwa to defraud the company of thousands of dollars.

DEALERS who boast of close links with powerful Zanu PF politicians and senior employees at Bikita Minerals are making a killing by facilitating the smuggling of truckloads of lithium from Zimbabwe’s biggest lithium producer on a daily basis, depriving the country of potential revenue, The NewsHawks can reveal.

This investigation, with support from Information for Development Trust under a project meant to support investigative reporting focusing on the accountability and governance of foreign interests and investments in Zimbabwe and southern Africa, shows that cases of smuggling increased after the acquisition of the mine by China Sinomine Resources Group for US$200 million early last year.

The acquisition and subsequent investment resulted in a five-fold increase in production in the 15-square-kilometre mining area.

Zimstat director got a Landcruiser from government which you now know costs US$400,000 because of corruption.

He bought it after 3 years for a mere US$300, yes THREE HUNDRED dollars.

That is how they loot!
