In 1987, Grant and Susan Johnson first hit the road on their RTW motorcycle travels, north-to-south, two-up on a 1986 BMW R80GS - an adventure that spanned 13 years. In 1997, they launched Horizons Unlimited to inspire, inform, and connect like-minded travellers who want to make their adventure dreams a reality. Horizons Unlimited exists on this simple philosophy:

That ADV moment when you're unsure what country you're in...

"Throwback to 6 years ago. I was looking lost when I reached Stelvio Pass, wondering if I was in Italy or Switzerland.

My overloaded scooter with a non-European plate became the centre of attention. People asked me where I came from, some asked to take a photo with me. This candid photo was taken by Dave Morris who later followed this page and sent this to me. Thank you.

I always joke about this, if I were to charge $1 for every photo taken, I would be rich. But that is not the case. Money was tight while travelling in this part of Europe. I started carrying a lunch box in that blue bag because eating out was expensive. I didn't have mobile data travelling in Europe because the frequent country change in Europe made SIM card purchases not economically worthwhile. Instead, I relied on offline maps, free wifi at petrol stations or stopping to ask locals.

Being in the expensive part of the world compelled me to devise ways to stretch my dollars. Travellers I met along the way have inspired me to think out of the box on what I can do in exchange for travel experience. One talented singer and guitarist shared he busked on the streets and even went to the extreme of dumpster diving for food.

What can I offer? I volunteered for accommodation as a receptionist, social media manager, and yoga teacher. I camped, couch-surfed and bunked at friends' homes. In return, I bought food, cook, do some housework, did gardening, harvesting and shared travel stories. Many times, strangers randomly gave me cash and food on the road, just because they value what I was doing and my stories."

As much as we wish our photos + video footage would keep the adventures rolling, it really boils down to a global community that pitches in to help fix our bikes, doesn't it?🤩

"The next day after a day of being lazy I got around to do a valve adjustment on both bikes after some 4000km. I always start on the left side and always re-torque the heads. When I go to the top left nut I crank the wrench and as I turn I feel it, it’s not stoping. I check my wrench and try again, knowing that the worst has happened. The threads on the cylinder stud are stripped.

Knowing that the only way is forward, I disassemble the rockers so I can take a look at the crankcase and know what I’m working with.

The next step is looking for an insert and the tools to make the repair. I start asking around and I get a few contacts that seem promising at first but end up being dead ends. For a day and a half I search with all means available but I have no luck. What I’m looking for is too specific and even in Lilongwe (the capita) I get nowhere. At the same time I’m contemplating the only possibility which is getting the tools from abroad. I reach out to London and South Africa. Thankfully... .schroer in Port Elizabeth... understood the gravity and urgency of my situation.

In a question of 12 hours Volker made me two inserts, sourced the drill bits, the cutting bit and made me a nifty driving tool for it. He gave me grease, Loctite, a new cylinder rod and a few other bits I needed for other things. In 12 hours he was at the DHL store shipping it. Unfortunately the fastest it could be shipped was 7 days. Immediately I told him to keep the package, as time is our most valuable asset. I’ll fly and pick it up from him, and fly back the next day. Gives us also an opportunity to meet."

Bodging and troubleshooting are also a part of the adventure story. Less glamorous, maybe, but solutions are often the unsung heroes of overlanding.

"Bren’s chain snapped at the end of a long day of riding in Kyrgyzstan’s backcountry. Fortunately, we had a spare master link so we... had the parts for a fix in the morning. The escapade had us reminiscing about other times we’ve had malfunctions in less than ideal situations. This is a collection of some of the most memorable:

In Afghanistan, 10 kilometres from the border, my engine quit. After a couple hours of diagnostics Bren determined that it was most likely an internal top end issue, so we had to implement a low tech solution: we bought a rope. Bren towed me 35 kilometres to the next town on the other side of the border. It... didn’t seem too crazy to continue to the capital city... nearly 200km.

One morning at a remote spot on the... coast of Argentina our KTM 1290 wouldn’t start. Bren predicted a fuel filter issue, and... used a plastic bag under the cap as a seal before flipping the fuel tank over. He took out the pump, removed the filter, then put it in a bag with gas and used a hose to blow & suck dirt from the filter. ... the battery was now dead. Bren had some tie wire in the bike to improvise...

Mid-way through... a 460km off-road route in the Bolivian Altiplano, we blew a front wheel bearing and had... a fix with some rubber found in the desert.

In Peru, we waited five hours in the... jungle before someone came along to give us and our KTM a ride. This was the only time we weren’t able to figure things out... Two weeks prior while reinstalling the fuel pump after changing the filters, a ground wire caught and pulled out slightly. All the bumping around the last thousand kilometres and it finally came right off."

HU GERMANY AUTUMN presenter: WERNER ZWICK returns with stories from the western Balkans. Get read to dig into a smorgasbord of some of the most spectacular vistas you can visit. No a.i., promise! The world really is that beautiful on its own.

Wrap up the travel season (at least, in the northern hemisphere) with a warm gathering in Germany later this month! Local organizer, Jens Ruprecht, is a friendly face to welcome you there. Bring some friends with you and make new ones.

Is there such as thing as a tormented overlander who wants to be left alone in the middle of nowhere? Left alone, yes. But what about tormented? Impossible when you're surrounded by this!

"Centuries of wind and water have carved deep valleys and gorges into this parched region of Kyrgyzstan. After a satisfying days ride, we set up camp and climbed a hillside to watch the setting sun accentuate the contours and layers of the landscape and ignite the ochre and rust hues ablaze.

Sometimes we sit in these moments in silent contentment, and others times we drop into deep conversation. Lately we have been discussing ethical/moral living and what that may mean or look like. Where in our lives do we sway in our ethics - due to greed, wanting, aversion or … - and where are we steadfast?

Together we can always speak candidly and never be afraid of unintended consequences when we misspeak or get things wrong. Whatever the topic - something we read in a book, a thought we had in our helmets, or an experience had that day - the space between us is safe, it is sacred and it is ours. We don’t have it all figured out - we never will - but it is here that we try."

Are there times when even two wheels are two too many? Space certainly calls for a different way of looking at "adventure". We think it's the same kind of mental stretch needed to go from exploring around town to stretching your mileage to another country and beyond. Luiza's having some fun with it here!

"YURI GAGARIN. Look what this handsome guy did! First man to fly into space. Then karma hit hard and he DIED AT ONLY 34 IN A PLANE CRASH. But history has been written.

At an altitude of approximately 7,000 meters, the capsule was ejected and Gagarin, parachuted. He landed on the ground in the Saratov region in a field where two peasant women were working. They stared at him in shock, while he said: "Don't be afraid! I'm one of you, I'm a Soviet!" Then he asked for a phone and, wearing his orange jumpsuit and white helmet, called the control center, revealing the location where he had landed.

This is a popular story, but I'm wondering what phone he accessed in the middle of the field in 1961 🤔😆.

Today, his capsule lies alone near Volga river. Just a few km away, the main landing site has been arranged as a memorial park where visitors can see the complexity of space machines and some facts from the biography of Gagarin. Travels go on!"

If you ever cross paths with another traveller, all you might get are a few words exchanged about a suggested place to visit. Imagine Aga or Yan saying these words to you... maybe showing you on a paper map, no GPS tracks to download... just a few sentences that might lead you to a wonderful experience. That's all you have. And then you part ways to make your own unique memories.

"One of the most beautiful detours off the Carretera Austral --> Paso Roballos & Ruta 41 heading north to Los Antiguos.

Instead of staying on the main route, we took a detour through Paso Roballos and onto the stunning Ruta 41 on the Argentinian side. It's a remote gravel road that hugs the Chile-Argentina border, taking you through absolutely otherworldly landscapes.

The stretch from the border to Los Antiguos is only about 100 km, but it took us a full day and a half. We were stopping every five minutes, completely captivated by the views and trying to capture the beauty of this place.

If you're riding in Patagonia, Ruta 41 is a must. Definitely one of the highlights of our trip so far."
