Another heartbreaking loss 😔💔

Something woke Susan in the middle of an August night in 2011. Perhaps she sensed her life was about to change forever…

Minutes later the police were at her door. They asked about her 23-year-old daughter, Ashley, and Susan knew instantly something terrible had happened. She began to tremble.

“I sat down on the stairs and the officer knelt beside me. He told me my daughter had passed away in a car crash,” Susan recalls. “He asked me if there was someone I could call. I couldn’t hold the phone. I couldn’t even move. I just curled up in the fetal position.”

Everything stopped that night for Susan and her two other children. Life, as they knew it, ended the moment someone made the decision to drive impaired, robbing them of a beautiful daughter… a dear sister. It’s hard to imagine their lives could ever begin again.

Slowly, painfully, Susan and her family began to pick up the pieces of their shattered lives. But they didn’t do it alone. “MADD Canada provided us with the tools to cope and survive,” says Susan. “They gave us the strength to know our lives were going to move on.”

Too many families know the devastation of losing a loved one to impaired driving. In an instant, their lives are changed forever, left to navigate unimaginable grief and loss.

What do think of this one? Alcohol and speed are such a deadly mix. Is it enough? 3 day driving suspension and car impounded for 7 days? Would people take the chance, or “feel cool” if the consequences were more severe? What about losing driving privileges for years on the first offense? Why not? What do you think?

Just after 6:20 a.m. this morning, an AbbyPD Patrol Supervisor was in the area of Whatcom Road and Highway 1 when he observed a 2023 Hyundai Genesis travelling at a very high rate of speed. The officer, driving an unmarked police vehicle, watched as the Genesis merged onto eastbound Highway 1 and continued to accelerate aggressively.

Radar confirmed the vehicle was travelling at 191 km/h in a posted 100 km/h zone, nearly doubling the speed limit.

When the vehicle was stopped, the 18-year-old Class 7N driver was found to have more than just a heavy foot. The officer also detected alcohol in his system, resulting in a 3-day Immediate Roadside Prohibition being issued.

The driver was issued a $483 excessive speeding ticket, and his mother's vehicle was impounded for seven days. He now also faces a review by the Superintendent of Motor Vehicles, which could result in an additional licence suspension.

While the driver may have been in a hurry, the consequences are likely to slow things down considerably. Driving is a privilege, not a right. Our officers are out there keeping roads safe, even when you don't see us.

In Episode 05: Why Victims' Stories Don't Stop Impaired Driving, I shared all I have learned about why people who drive impaired aren't swayed by victims' stories. So why do I keep sharing them?

Because victims matter. Because telling their stories is how those of us left behind keep them with us. Because the people who listen to these stories, and can empathise with this devastating and senseless loss, can help us to change things. Abbey and Reid were killed by impaired drivers. But that didn't kill the love that we have for them and sharing their stories helps us to keep that love alive.

July was tough, remembering Abbey's anniversary & Reid Davidson's crash. My heart & body feel the grief.

My digital memory is also lively and while I appreciate the reminders, they are hard. Like on the 24th when this one popped up. It was 5 days after she died, time for bed and I couldn't find the dogs. They had gone to Abbey's room and this is how I found them. Moose was even coveting one of Abbey's socks. Sweet, heartbreaking.

🙏 I appreciate your patience as I caught up on episode 09, now live! 💕 Hear Reid's story & meet his mom Lisa in the latest episode. 😊
