Ontario Provincial Police confirm that human remains found near Mattawa, east of North Bay, on December 28, 2025, have been identified as those of 26-year-old Hakim Muhikira of Ottawa.

The remains were located in a remote area characterized by rural roads, dense forest, and nearby waterways. While sparsely populated, the region is well known to residents of North Bay and surrounding communities for its camps, backroads, and seasonal travel.

OPP say preliminary information suggests there is no broader threat to public safety, though residents may notice an increased police presence as the investigation continues. The case is being led by the OPP Criminal Investigation Branch, with assistance from the Office of the Chief Coroner, as authorities work to determine the circumstances surrounding Muhikira’s death.

Condolences are being extended to Hakim Muhikira’s family, friends, and community as they await answers. Discoveries like this send ripples far beyond the scene itself, underscoring how deeply connected communities are — from North Bay to the smallest rural township.

Anyone with information that may assist investigators is urged to contact the North Bay OPP at 1-888-310-1122. Those wishing to remain anonymous can contact Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS).

As the investigation continues, many are hoping for clarity, accountability, and justice.

Man Arrested on Highway 11: a Holiday Reminder Not to Drink and Drive

With holiday travel and New Years celebrations coming soon, police are once again reminding drivers that impaired driving is both dangerous and entirely preventable.

Ontario Provincial Police say a 27-year-old novice driver is facing multiple charges following an incident on Highway 11 that began as a routine traffic stop and escalated when the driver allegedly failed to pull over. Police attempted to stop the vehicle in the Burk’s Falls area, then again near South River, before it was finally stopped just south of North Bay.

Officers determined the driver had consumed alcohol and arrested the individual. The driver was taken to the North Bay OPP detachment for testing and later charged with impaired driving-related offences, fleeing police, and violating novice driver alcohol restrictions.

Beyond the criminal charges, the incident also resulted in an immediate 90-day licence suspension and a seven-day vehicle impound — penalties police say are meant to protect the public.

As the holiday season continues, drivers are being urged to plan ahead: arrange a ride, use a taxi or rideshare, or don’t drive at all if you’ve been drinking. One poor decision behind the wheel can put countless lives at risk — including your own.

Did you know North Bay played a role in shaping one of Hollywood’s most beloved actors?
Before becoming a global star, this person spent part of his childhood in North Bay, Ontario. His family lived there in the late 1960s and early 1970s while his father, was stationed at Canadian Forces Base North Bay. Like many military families, frequent moves were part of life — but North Bay left a lasting impression.
He has spoken fondly about his time in the city, even recalling everyday details like the streets he lived on, including Madelena Drive. Those early years became part of his Canadian identity, something he continues to acknowledge proudly, despite being born in Edmonton and later growing up in British Columbia.
For North Bay, it’s a small but meaningful connection to a world-famous figure — and a reminder of how even a few childhood years can leave lifelong memories.

Can you guess who it is? Name is in the comments!

Beavers are one of the most fascinating animals in North America, known for their intelligence and impressive building skills. Using their strong orange teeth, which never stop growing, beavers can cut through trees and branches with surprising efficiency. They build dams and lodges that create ponds, giving them protection from predators and safe access to food during winter.
Excellent swimmers, beavers have webbed back feet and a broad, flat tail that helps them steer through the water. That tail also plays several roles, from storing fat to acting as an alarm system — a loud tail slap on the water warns others of danger. Beavers can stay underwater for up to 15 minutes thanks to their ability to slow their heart rate and conserve oxygen.
Beyond their physical abilities, beavers have a huge impact on their surroundings. The wetlands they create provide habitat for birds, fish, amphibians, and insects, and can help improve water quality by trapping sediment. Often active at night, beavers quietly reshape landscapes in ways that support entire ecosystems, proving that small animals can make a big difference.
