I suffered a pretty devastating injury last fall. I was competing at the ITF Union Open European Taekwon-Do Championships in London, UK last October and tore my ACL in my 2nd sparring round. I managed to win that match and the next one to take the gold medal in the veteran women’s +75kg division, but spent the next few months unable to train at all.

Now 7 months post-injury and awaiting ACL reconstruction surgery, I’m bound and determined to get back into shape. I’ll be 50 in a couple of months and want to go into the surgery feeling strong, leaner — I’ve put on 15 lbs or so since my injury — and just generally in a better position to rehab this injury. I won’t be able to return to martial arts training until a year or so after the surgery, but I am determined to compete again.

Never mind the injury. Never mind my age nor my now dwindling hormones. I have definitely not peaked. This will be my comeback story.

Because you can always start over.
