I made this page in hope that someone who finds a baby squirrel can help it grow into the wonderful strong adult it was meant to be, :) and to share my love and admiration of these intelligent, industrious creatures!
I share a lot of photos from around the web, and in NO WAY claim ownership to those that are not mine- if they are yours, let me know and I'll give you props!
My intention is ONLY to share the love... Not to claim fame for any piece of media that doesn't belong to me!. The squirrels are quite capable of that on their own! :)
My background: I am a 'Squirrel Whisperer'.
I was thrust into raising a baby squirrel when I realized there was no one that would help, despite many, many efforts.
The bottom line is we just do NOT have enough Wildlife rehabbers available; the Ministry of Natural Resources is NOT making this any easier by promoting archaic inane ideas for the relocation of found wildlife. Through much research and the help of tens of Rehabbers, I learned the skills necessary to raise my little girl into a strong, extremely healthy adult, capable of being released into the 'wild' where she belonged. That was in 2009. I continue to work with squirrels today.
My squirrels have not forgotten me.. they visit every morning to have a healthy breakfast, and then they go on their way, doing.. well, whatever it is that Squirrels do in their spare time. :) They tend to sleep away the warm afternoons, becoming active again before dusk.
My hope is that if you find a pinkie or a juvenile, you will know what to do immediately or have someone to help. If you feel you do not have recourse and can raise it yourself, I can help you out, or introduce you to the people and resources you will need to do it yourself.
In Ontario see: http://www.ontariowildliferescue.ca/wildlifecentres/?care=squirrel for assistance if I'm not available!

IMPORTANT NOTE: It is ILLEGAL to harbour wildlife in Ontario. The rule is this : "all rehabilitated immature wildlife outside a rabies High Risk Area shall be released as close as possible to where it was found up to a maximum distance of 15 km. The maximum release distance for adult wildlife will remain at 1 km"... it's decent I suppose, easy enough to accommodate for a rehabber with space and in the 'right' kind of area. But when you consider that an orphan has no established territory (being still in it's drey etc. when found) it's just, well... *sigh*.😣
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
A NOTE OF CAUTION!!!!!
If you are faced with no hope of help for the orphan and are willing to let your moral obligation over-ride your legal one, then know this: bringing these little ones up is not for the weak.. a HUGE amount of time and energy is needed along with $$$ to invest in it's care and feeding. Also know this... That cuddly baby WILL 'wild up', and you WILL be bitten, to the bone. It hurts.
If you feel you can NOT invest the time, $ or energy times 100 (because this is how overburdened and frustrated you will feel some days!)... I will try to help you and lead you to the individuals and agencies that may be able to help you.
✿ IF YOU FIND A BABY ---> SPEED IS OF THE ESSENCE. They dehydrate very quickly... Put the baby in a towel with warm bottle of water around it and either get the baby to someone who can help, or contact me to learn how to begin re-hydration.
✿ Thank you for taking the time to become aware of the plights of the smaller members of our community. :)
