The Importance of Palliative Care: "Palliative care is care that is administered early in the disease trajectory. It's care that could be administered alongside active treatments to control the disease. Palliative care should be delivered by not just palliative care specialist teams, but could be delivered by your family doctor, you're a nurse practitioner, you're a nephrologist oncologist cardiologist, your personal support worker, your PT, OT, your Pilates instructor.

Everyone has a role to play..."
— Jeff Moat

In our latest episode of Lessons From The Core, Lisa Khera talks to Jeff Moat about the transformative power of loss, social entrepreneurship, and palliative care.

Jeff Moat shares his journey from working in the private financial sector to a career in palliative care. After experiencing the profound loss of a parent, Jeff realized that he could use his skills to make a tangible difference in the lives of individuals and communities. Jeff has contributed to initiatives that enhanced access to palliative care for more Canadians, created better experiences for healthcare professionals and patients, and facilitated quality improvement.

Jeff's passion for palliative care led him to work with Pallium Canada, a research-driven social enterprise based in Ottawa. Pallium Canada enhances the quality and accessibility of palliative care by building the capacity of healthcare professionals and communities.

They offer a courseware called Leap (Learning Essential Approaches to Palliative Care), aimed at ensuring healthcare professionals acquire necessary skills and knowledge and put them into action, reshaping the entire continuum of care. Pallium Canada also provides resources for the general public who may not fully understand palliative care.

The episode highlights that palliative care is not just care delivered at the end of life, and everyone, including family doctors, nurses, personal support workers, PTs, OTs, Pilates instructors, and others, can have a role in delivering palliative care and supporting patients and their families.

Giving good palliative care earlier and more effectively is crucial and requires a shift in mindset about what palliative care means.

The episode further delves into the stigma surrounding palliative care and how normalizing discussions around living with life-limiting illnesses, dying, death, and grieving is crucial to overcoming obstacles to providing comprehensive care.

The episode also discusses the importance of self-care in caregiving and healthcare professions, and how Pilates and exercise can alleviate stress and help achieve stability.

In this episode, we were joined by Jess Bosch, an author and founder of Passion Point Press and Wilder Way Retreats, who is passionate about helping people find their voice and tap into their intuition through writing.

Jess emphasized the importance of writing as a means of self-expression, and as a healing tool to help women become "healed, heard, and whole."

During the episode, she also shared insights on how retreats can help people connect with nature, further their personal development, and experience sensual, versatile experiences.

Jess has always used writing as a way to express her feelings freely and without fear of judgment. Writing has been a constant in her life, serving as a source of security, and she has even created a business out of her passion to support others in finding their voice through writing.

Throughout the episode, Jess gave examples of how writing has transformed her life and how it has encouraged her to trust her gut and create a supportive circle. She also emphasized the importance of creative goals and dreams, and how attending a retreat can help provide a much-needed change of environment to focus on personal growth.

These retreats are designed to cater to women of all backgrounds, and Jess emphasized the importance of taking care of one's body, heart, and mind.
