Don't forget to add this new book by Dr. Harvey Max Chochinov to your reading list for the new year:
"Millions of tonnes of critical minerals lie dormant in Canadaâs own backyard â locked in mine tailings, coal ash and industrial residues," says Apoorv Sinha.
Here's how we can transform them:
With Prime Minister Carneyâs recently tabled budget and announcements of major projects, Canada has declared its ambition...

"With the settlement funds, Manitoba has every reason and the means to launch ambitious plans and programs with the goal of â within a generation â creating a to***co-free and nicotine-free population. This would also reduce the burden on healthcare services to treat its consequences," says Dr. Andrew Halayko and Dr. Chris D. Pascoe:

"Some fear that Cowichan will unleash a flood of lawsuits against individual landowners. Thatâs alarmist.
Reconciliation between Aboriginal title and private ownership can and should be achieved through negotiation, not litigation. And there is nothing to suggest Indigenous Nations want to displace homeowners or seize all private property.
In fact, recent examples show the opposite.
The Haida Nation reached an agreement with Canada and British Columbia recognizing Aboriginal title while preserving private ownership. The Wolastoqey Nation in New Brunswick has clearly said it does not seek the return of lands from homeowners or small businesses.
These cases reflect a balanced, forward-looking approach: recognition without undue disruption."

Letâs get personalâindividual-focused prevention programs are key to reducing the risk of diabetes says Dr. Harpreet S. Bajaj MD, MPH in the Medical Post:
"While COVID, bird flu, Mpox and measles have dominated health headlines recently, another health crisis has lurked in the background, threatening millions in Canada.
Close to six million Canadians have diabetes and millions more are at risk of developing it, particularly type 2, the most common form. The chronic disease not only poses significant health risks for those who have it â it is the seventh leading cause of death in Canada and it also costs our healthcare system close to $30 billion a year to treat.
The situation will only worsen as Canadaâs population ages and grows unless we adopt effective prevention strategies. A promising solution lies in personalized prevention programs that empower individuals to make sustainable lifestyle changes that lower their risk of developing type 2 diabetes.
Preliminary results from a recent Canadian Diabetes Prevention Program (CDPP) trial show how effective these types of programs can be.
While there are some risk factors for type 2 diabetes that individuals cannot change â including aging and genetic factors â there are others, such as diet, exercise and weight, that they can control.
The CDPP study examined whether a 12-month digital program using one-on-one health coaching, group education workshops and health tracking could help high-risk individuals adopt a healthier lifestyle that prevented or delayed the onset of type 2 diabetes."

"Responding to recent job actions by obstetrician/gynecologists, a region of B.C. is advertising for temporary obstetrician/gynecologists with super-sized payments.
The rate is currently advertised at $7,117 per 24-hour period â a significant sum of public money given that in 2024 the median annual salary for obstetrician/gynecologists was $405,190 in B.C.
The advertisement also offers extra money for working after-hours and paid accommodation.
While B.C.âs approach is bound to attract applicants â possibly even unhappy Quebec obstetricians/gynecologists â it does little to change physician practices.
Instead of addressing any of the underlying problems in healthcare delivery â like access, costliness, quality and equity â the only certain outcome is that B.C. residents will pay more for the same services."
