I’ve been seeing ads for these smart typewriters and distraction-free screens. Does anyone use them? They look impressive but something tells me I wouldn’t have much of a need for them and they would just become another flashy toy. Anyone else use them or have recommendations for their favourite writing gizmos?

Have you ever come across a book that you thought would be one type of story and turned out to be another? For me it’s 11/22/63 by Stephen King. I thought it would be his typical horror/suspense novel but it turned into my favourite (not that I’ve read a lot to compare it to, to be fair) love story of all time. Any books that have done the same thing to you?

While ultimately abandoned by Tolkien as being too dark and devoid of grandeur when compared to his original trilogy, The New Shadow has sparked the imaginations of Middle Earth fans ever since. It wasn’t that long ago that I found out Robert Jordan planned on writing a sequel series to WoT about Mat and Tuon returning to Seanchan and that got me to thinking about other abandoned novel ideas. One rabbit hole later and all I can do is fixate on what could have been.

I think these four though are my favourites. In no particular order we have:

1) The New Shadow by J.R.R. Tolkien
2) The abandoned Seanchan novel by Robert Jordan
3) The original draft for Dune 7 (no, Brian Herbert doesn’t count) by Frank Herbert
4) The Talisman 3 by Stephen King and Peter Straub

I’m guessing most of you do your writing on a computer, but does anyone still do it by hand? I’ve been gifted a number of these beautiful notebooks but since I do most of my writing digitally I’m struggling to come up with ideas for them that would suit their quality! Need help!

Just finished watching Arrival (long overdue I know) and it got me thinking, is Sci-fi inherently easier to do smaller scale stories in? It seems like in fantasy the stories always involve global stakes while in Sci fi you can do these smaller scale adventures, like trying to figure out how to communicate with an alien species. Either way fantastic movie and even better short story!
