When someone you love opens up about what they’ve experienced, one of the most important things you can say is: “It's not your fault.”

No matter what happened or how they might feel, they are not to blame.
Survivors are often left sorting through waves of guilt, shame, and confusion. They might wonder if they did something wrong. Your words can help shift that weight.

Remind them gently: they are not responsible for what someone else did to them. That message holds immense weight. It can help begin to untangle some of the self-doubt that trauma leaves behind.

If you’re not sure how to respond, you’re not alone. The Canadian Human Trafficking Hotline is here for you too — whether you’re a survivor or someone trying to support one. Call or chat at 1-833-900-1010 or www.canadianhumantraffickinghotline.ca.

Today (July 12) is the International Day of Hope.

In Chapter 11 of The Art of Happiness in a Troubled World, the Dalai Lama shares one of his favorite passages from the great Buddhist master Shantideva:

“As long as space remains, as long as sentient beings remain, until then, may I too remain, and dispel the miseries of the world.”

This quote deeply resonates with me, as it speaks to the profound sense of purpose we all carry, regardless of our circumstances. No matter how difficult life becomes, each of us has a unique and essential place in the world. Some may find such a thought frustrating—”I’m just one person; how can I make a difference?” But the truth is, our presence itself is a gift. Simply by offering positive energy, nurturing goodwill, and wishing for the well-being of others, we contribute to the healing of the world.

You don’t need to be a global leader or have millions of followers to make an impact. The act of feeling, praying, meditating, or silently wishing for peace is in itself an act of great power. These quiet intentions, though unseen, ripple through the collective consciousness and uplift humanity. In a time when many of us remain in isolation due to the pandemic, this practice of wishing well and holding space for the suffering of others feels more vital than ever. It reminds us that, in the interconnectedness of all beings, even our smallest acts of kindness and compassion can dispel the darkness and bring light into the world.

All this inspired my 2020 electronic composition, Hope, Optimism and Resilience: https://frankhorvat.com/composition/hope-optimism-resilience/

Today (July 12) is the International Day of Hope.

I envisioned the concept for my composition 'Hope' many months before I began composing it on March 1, 2022—a date that coincided with Russia’s military invasion of Ukraine. Honestly, it was difficult to write about hope while hearing stories of immense suffering. Between this, the pandemic, crippling inflation, and climate change, one might ask: what can a human on this planet feel hopeful for?

Despite it all, I remain personally filled with a spirit of optimism. What other choice do we have? The external strife of the world must never overshadow our inner spiritual pursuit of happiness, goodness, and positivity.

Over the years, my creative work has often been driven by serious topics, particularly climate change and other social justice issues. At times, composing these works has been cathartic, helping me to better understand the complexities of these challenges. But did that process foster hope for the future? Did it suggest that the collective human experience could improve? Often, the answer was no.

That’s why I see this composition as a counterbalance to those earlier works. I’ve always believed that music plays a crucial role in raising awareness and inspiring change to make the world a fairer, better place. Yet history reminds us that music’s ability to instill hope for the future is just as vital.

Take a moment, breathe, reflect—and find some hope.

Dedicated to every person on this planet who yearns for a hopeful future.
