the depths of emotion, leaving a profound mark on our hearts and souls. Frank Horvat is one of the most inventive songwriters to come out of the contemporary scene in Canada (WholeNote Magazine). He has made the tricky musical leap that allows him to pursue a niche of his own (Edmonton Journal). Within the vast array of his compositions, he explores different themes, ranging from the wondrousness of life and love, to the environment and mental health. In a fast-paced world, his music offers a sanctuary, inviting audiences to pause, reflect, and find solace. Each note reveals deeply personal stories while leaving room for listeners to ponder their own. Frank’s music is featured on over twenty albums, showcasing his versatility and producing expertise across labels such as ATMA Classique, Azul Music, Centrediscs, Leaf Music, and Navona Records. His compositions have premiered on concert stages spanning five continents, resonating through theater, film, and the airwaves. From BBC Radio 3 to Bravo, CBC, CBS, Discovery, HBO, NBC, Netflix, and Vice, his music has woven its way into the fabric of our cultural consciousness. Gramophone, The Strad, BBC Music Magazine, and the Toronto Star have acclaimed his work, recognizing the profound impact of his artistry. In 2021, Frank Horvat delivered a powerful testament with the album Music for Self-Isolation, hailed as one of CBC Classical’s Top Five Albums of the Year and Ludwig van’s “Year In Review: Classical Gems”. That same year, his album Project Dovetail garnered acclaim as a “must-hear” selection on CBC Music’s Fall lineup. Deeply moved by the injustices and conflicts that plague society, he is on a mission to inspire unity and empathy through his compositions. From poignant reflections on human resilience to passionate calls for social justice, his music serves as a resounding voice, igniting dialog and inspiring change. He ignores boundaries and isn’t afraid to mix politics with art (Ludwig van). Frank Horvat’s environmental projects include an Arctic ice-themed sound installation featured at the 2024 Venice Biennale, his sustainably-minded 60+ stop North American Green Keys Tour, and his social media campaign and accompanying album, For Those Who Died Trying. The resulting tributes are poignant (BBC Music Magazine). This music honours the stories of murdered environmental activists with dozens of string quartets participating in the resulting awareness campaign. Quartets such as Juilliard, Merel, Mivos, Utrecht, and Zemlinsky as well as members of orchestras like the London Symphony brought these tributes to life, amplifying their urgent message worldwide. Frank Horvat’s mental health projects include his Piano Therapy Virtual Tour, and the acclaimed social media campaign and album Music for Self-Isolation, recorded at Roy Thomson Hall. Hailed as “a masterpiece of creative invention” (Vancouver Sun), BBC Radio 3 praised the album noting, “it takes a special skill to be able to create a whole atmosphere in a work that is just two minutes long”. The album reminds us that music is among the most mysterious and highest order of human skills (WholeNote Magazine). Over 150 soloists from around the world participated online and on the album. The album was CBC In Concert’s “Record of the Week”, described by CBC’s Paolo Pietropaolo as “truly a record of our times.”

Horvat has fearlessly ventured into uncharted territory, breaking away from traditional musical boundaries and embracing innovative styles. His compositions are a harmonious fusion of classical grandeur, improvisation, and contemporary influences, captivating listeners with their distinctive blend of audacity and vulnerability. Brain Injury Survivors often attribute their recovery not only to medical interventions but also to the unwavering support of family, friends, and specialized support groups. Emotional and social support can greatly enhance resilience and improve overall outcomes for those recovering from brain injuries.

Today is National Housing Day in Canada—a moment to reflect on the urgent need for safe, stable, and dignified housing for everyone.

My composition Almost Homeless - Ottawa was inspired by stories of those living on the edge of housing insecurity. On a day like today, I’m reminded why this music needed to be written.

I saw this emotional verse as an ideal follow-up to the second song, Seduction. It captures the prevalent experience of landowners who, after striking deals with Big Oil to permit fracking on their land, find themselves betrayed, violated, and in financial hardship. The vocals in this lament are heartfelt and unrestrained, while the piano accompaniment remains sparse, allowing the emptiness of the situation to fully resonate.

Some individuals who have experienced brain injuries develop hyperthymesia, an extremely rare condition where they can recall nearly every detail of their lives with extraordinary accuracy. While this is uncommon, it demonstrates the complex and mysterious ways brain injuries can alter cognitive function.

Track 5 from the album, Anatomy of the Recovering Brain, released by I Am Who I Am Records 1 year ago this month, featuring Kathryn Ladano (bass clarinet), Greg Turner (piano) and Pam Patel (voice). Inspired by Lucy and all brain injury survivors.

“Why didn’t you just leave?”
It’s a question that overlooks the complex realities faced by people experiencing trafficking. Leaving isn’t always straightforward. Many face manipulation, fear, isolation, or threats. Some rely on their trafficker for basic needs. Others are far from home, disconnected from support, or unsure where to turn.

Instead of asking why they stayed, we can work to understand what made leaving so difficult — and to reduce those barriers.

This song commences with a triumphant piano fanfare reminiscent of the grandeur found at an Olympic opening ceremony. As the voice joins in, it delivers a stately anthem, albeit tinged with a subtle mockery that mirrors the polished corporate image often projected by the oil and gas industry. Gradually, the song takes on an ominous and foreboding tone, describing the harsh realities of the destruction wrought by Big Oil. The piano steadily escalates in intensity, embracing dissonance to convey the devastation. The song concludes with a macabre twist on the earlier prideful anthem, its tone solemn as it quotes a biblical verse that forewarns of an apocalyptic future, offering a chilling reflection on the world's trajectory.

Prophecy, track 8 from the album, Fractures, released by I Am Who I Am Records 2 years ago this month, commissioned and performed by soprano, Meredith Hall, with pianist, Brahm Goldhamer. Text by Mark Trechok.

‘Ag Land’ serves as a character study of a 'roughneck' oil and gas worker, quietly seated in a bar. The narrator watches this person with a sense of admiration, although their fascination is layered with complexity. As a result, the song's rhythm alternates between a flirtatious swing beat and a somber, steady meter to capture the intricate allure of the scene.

‘Shift’ is the second character study within the cycle, though this time it centers around a fellow science enthusiast and friend. In the first half of the song, we celebrate their remarkable sense of discovery and intelligence. However, as the song progresses, a palpable shift occurs. We observe our subject's demeanor darken, their once vibrant joy for life diminished. Why? It is the melancholic consequence of their current occupation, working for Big Oil, and the toll it exacts on the human spirit.

Tracks 7 & 10 from the album, Fractures, released by I Am Who I Am Records 2 years ago this month, commissioned and performed by soprano, Meredith Hall, with pianist, Brahm Goldhamer. Texts by Wayne Mennecke.
