Do you want your horse to be calm?
Be calm first.

You want him soft?
Soften first.

You want him brave?
Breathe first.

Horsemanship isn’t asking him to do what you won’t.
It’s showing him how.

If you’re anxious, he can’t be peaceful.
If you’re frustrated, he can’t be willing.
If you’re in your ego, he can’t be safe.

In the gaited world, riders are often told that a low head means relaxation, but if the horse is still leaning on their shoulders or hollowing their back, a low head is just a forced frame. True relaxation isn't a head position; it's a mental exhale and a physical lift through the thoracic sling. You can’t cue relaxation so if you’re asking for head down but not back up, you’re just training a different kind of brace.
