Desmond’s Travel Notes 🧳
Day 39 - August 1, 2019

I discovered on the ferry ride that santorini has quite a few wineries and a long history of producing wine. With that knowledge, we hopped on our atv and decided to check a few out. The first winery we visited was amazing, built directly in the cliff, overlooking the port and the volcano in the distance. The wine was excellent, featuring a rich minerality from the volcanic soil. It was also our first taste of vin santo, similar to icewine but instead of freezing, the grapes are left out to dry and turn almost into raisins before being pressed for a truly delicious dessert wine.

The second winery was even more fun! (For me) because it featured a 300m wine museum 8m below the ground, displaying the history of wine making in Santorini! I ended up buying a very small bottle because it was just so good! Then, we drove around on the atv for a little while and headed back to our place to get ready to visit oia.

The drive may have been my favourite part, twisting and turning up the mountain side to reach the city on the other side of the island. When we got there, as expected.. The place was grounded full of tourists... just like us... We managed to get some really great pictures, and even got the very end of the sunset!

Once the sun had set we made our way to a restaurant where I had my eye on the meatballs which are delicious in Greece. We had a beautiful meal, finishing off with chocolate pie, snapped a few more photos of oia in the night and then tried to find the atv, which was lost for about a half an hour! We found it though, and made our dark journey home, twisting back around the mountain with our bellies full!
