Just because it’s August doesn’t mean your gardening season is over. 🌱

If you’re in Zone 5b, there’s still plenty of time to grow fresh food before frost—and some crops actually prefer the cooler weather!

🥬 Kale
🥕 Carrots
🫜 Beets
🥬 Spinach
🥗 Lettuce
🌱 Peas
…and more!

I’ve put together a quick list in this reel that you can screenshot and save for your next trip to the garden centre.

One thing I always remind people is this:

Start where you are.

Food security isn’t about having a huge homestead. It’s about taking one step at a time. Maybe this year it’s a pot of lettuce. Maybe it’s one raised bed. Maybe it’s finally planting that packet of kale seeds that’s been sitting in your gardening bin.

Every season is another opportunity to learn something new.

She came with the name Bonnie, but I’m not sure it’s sticking. We need something that fits her vibe (sweet, a little sassy, and always up to something).

Listen, truth-be-told, I’ve personally had a lot of personal challenges this year that made starting my garden this year REALLY tough. Couple that with the extreme drought our area has had and that means my garden isn’t doing as well as it has in previous years. That’s farming. Anyone else?

Guess what? Not all hope is lost; if you’re in a similar zone to me, (zone 5b) you’ve got plenty of time yet. If you’re curious what zone you’re in, just search the farmers almanac— a great tool!

For those in the same zone (or warmer) that me, it’s time to start thinking about your FALL garden!

What to Plant Now – Zone 5b (Late July)

(Approximately 60–70 days left until first frost, Sept 27)

Crop Days to Harvest:

Spinach 40–50 days Succession sow every 2 weeks.

Lettuce (leaf) 30–45 days Best in cooler weather.

Arugula 20–40 days Quick grower.

Kale 50–65 days Sweetens after frost.

Swiss Chard 50–60 days Cut-and-come-again harvest.

Radishes 20–30 days Fast harvest.

Turnips 50–60 days Harvest before heavy frost.

Beets 55–65 days Great for fall harvest.

Carrots (short) 60–70 days Mulch for extended harvest.

Bok Choy 45–60 days Thrives in cooler weather.

Kohlrabi 50–60 days Harvest when bulbs are 2–3".

Cilantro 40–50 days Bolts less in cool weather.

Dill 40–60 days Ideal for late pickling.

✨NEW COOP GOODIES ALERT!✨

I’m so gosh darn excited— The Poultry Supply Co. just sent me their chicken feeder and waterer to try, and I’m not gonna lie… I feel like my flock just got the 5-star treatment. 🐔💅

Where are my homesteaders and chicken parents at?! You know the little things—like not having to refill water every 12 hours—can feel like a straight-up win. 🙌

I’ll be unboxing and setting everything up soon (with a whole lotta sass and chicken chaos, of course), so stay tuned for all the details, first impressions, and how the ladies react. 🐓💧🍽️

THE POWER IS BACK, BABY!

After 7 days of living like I was starring in an 1800s survival documentary (but with more modern snacks), we’ve officially rejoined the land of the electrified. I could cry tears of joy… but I’m too busy running the dishwasher, doing ALL the laundry, and staring lovingly at my oven.

Also—someone please hold a moment of silence because I might burn the adult onesie that got me through this week. It’s been real, but it’s giving trauma now.

And because life doesn’t believe in breaks, R and I are off to a swim meet this weekend! Trading fireplace huddle vibes for pool deck flip flop / short-wearing energy. Let’s go!

Thank you Hydro One and numerous other organizations from neighbouring provinces who came to help during this unprecedented event. It was wild, and in the power of positivity, helped us identify a couple of gaps in our homestead plan.
