Roy Ayers, born on September 10, 1940, in Los Angeles, California, was a legendary vibraphonist, composer, and producer known as the "Godfather of Neo-Soul." He grew up in a musical family, with his father playing trombone and his mother playing piano. At the age of five, Ayers received his first pair of vibraphone mallets from the renowned Lionel Hampton, which sparked his lifelong passion for music.
Ayers began his career in the early 1960s, initially recording as a bebop sideman. In 1963, he released his debut studio album, *West Coast Vibes*. He gained prominence when he joined jazz flautist Herbie Mann in 1966. In the early 1970s, Ayers formed his own band, Roy Ayers Ubiquity, which became known for its innovative blend of jazz, funk, soul, and R&B.
One of Ayers' most famous compositions is "Everybody Loves the Sunshine," released in 1976. The song has been widely sampled by numerous artists, including Mary J. Blige, Common, and Tyler, the Creator. Ayers also composed the soundtrack for the 1973 blaxploitation film *Coffy*, starring Pam Grier.
Throughout his career, Ayers released numerous albums and collaborated with a wide range of artists, including Erykah Badu, Fela Kuti, and The Roots. His music has left a lasting impact on the genres of jazz, funk, and neo-soul.
Roy Ayers passed away on March 4, 2025, in New York City after a long illness. He is survived by his wife, Argerie, and their children, Mtume and Ayana Ayers.
