I just got a Gen II for my Morgan Jazz GM, and I can’t believe the difference. Until using your ligature I’ve never been able to tell much difference from one ligature to another. My 1957 Mark VI Low A Bari went from having a nice low end and a weak upper range to having a full, thick low range and equally full and thick upper register that I didn’t know it was capable of. I told a friend that it was like going from driving a Honda Accord to getting behind the wheel of a Ferrari!

The new Evolution #4 ligature is a big success. Large sound filled with higher and lower harmonics. Many musicians comment that it is the best ligature they played. Fast attacks and articulatrion, great projection, well focused tone, it has everything. The hard rubber harmonic plate will do it for you. Have a good day.

Bonjour Marc

Marc,
Got the ligature today. Plays great… Here are my comments (use them as you choose):

=====================
I was playing clarinet at a jam session several weeks ago with the sax section of our big band. They are all experienced performers and music educators. After we’d played for a while we took a break and the guy hosting the jam session asked me if I’d ever heard of a Marc Jean ligature. I hadn’t. He stepped out and came back with a ligature and said “Try this and tell me what you think.”

My horn was all warmed up, so I played a quick phrase with my existing ligature, then carefully held the reed in place and replaced my ligature with the Marc Jean. I repeated the same phrase and stopped. I was surprised; it felt different, fuller, more resonant. The guy just smiled and said “Makes a difference, doesn’t it?”

One of the tenor players, who has an absolutely beautiful, full sound, pointed to his mouthpiece and said “I’ve got a Marc Jean on my tenor and absolutely love it.” The jam session host pointed to the Marc Jean on his alto. I’d always thought he has a beautiful sound as well. How had I never heard about this ligature?

Over the years I’ve accumulated many clarinet ligatures; some came with the mouthpiece, some were special designs. But truthfully, none seemed to make much of a difference in the sound I was getting. The Marc Jean did. Marc’s web site talks about going into a recording studio and getting 3 harmonics above and below the fundamental. All I know is that as a player, the horn felt more responsive and the sound felt fuller. Others in the room noticed the difference as well. I played on the Marc Jean for the remainder of the jam session and when I got home, immediately went online and ordered one for myself.

To me, the most important thing about getting a good sound is the person playing the instrument. If you’re a novice or only play occasionally there are other things you should probably focus on before investing in an expensive ligature. But if you’re an experienced player with a horn, mouthpiece and reed setup that you like and are looking for that “little extra something” to get the sound you want, I’d recommend trying this ligature. You won’t be disappointed.

Ligatures are now much more than just a metal band holding the reed onto the mouthpiece. The real goal of the ligature craftsman is to amplify the reed vibrations by adapting various techniques, whether they be new points of contact or the use of new materials.

We found that oboes and bassoons, using double reeds, produce more harmonics in their sound than a clarinet or a bass clarinet.
A wider sound will have as many harmonics as possible surrounding the fundamental and it will simply sound larger.

Hence, will piling up 2 reeds within a ligature generate more harmonics? Kind of, but hard to do. Our approach was to cut the upper part of that second reed, as we can’t bite on two at once and to test the cut reed using different types of woods. We found that harder woods produce more harmonics. Therefore, the use of granadilla wood seems to be the best because of its resistance to humidity and for the sheer warmth in the sound.

The entire combination has to vibrate all together. That is why metal in contact with the reed doesn’t work so well, it simply does not amplify the vibration of the reed. And a large variety of materials don’t work either for the exact same reason.

In order to be successful, these contact points must be in the same V shape and parallel to the edges of your sax or clarinet reed.

The Marc Jean Ligature is the only ligature using this technology.
Its efficiency has been proven, and is appreciated and acclaimed by many players around the world.
Marc’s factory is small and each ligature is mainly hand made with the addition of the wood piece made by a CNC machine. The metal band is also CNC laser cut to ensure a maximum of precision.
They are nicely engraved to be among the best-looking ligatures on the market even if they are not the most expensive ones. Time, care and experimented craftmanship are incorporated into each and every one of them.

More research is still being made. Prototypes are continuously shipped to pro players to be tested. Recently, hard rubber was found to also be an excellent vibrations conductor. No wonder they make mouthpieces out of rubber. What does hard rubber do differently? It adds speed to the attack, with more response and better articulation. The sound is nearly as warm as with the wood piece.

So, you can request a ligature with hard rubber.
Marc’s ligatures are offered in 5 finishing’s with the choice of 2 different granadilla pieces and two hard rubber pieces. You can even have your initials or logo engraved on your own personalised metal band.

Marc is also the only ligature maker who designed one for Otto link metal mouthpieces. The metal band upper part of this ligature folds to contour above the ridge on top of the mouthpiece.

All components used in their making are of top quality and they are built to last.

No matter what style of music you are playing, a large, warm and very rich sound will always be a positive addition to your playing.

Yet another good comment had been posted towards our product. Albeit dated, it's still pleasing to see people are enjoying it so much:

""
I've recently bought one. It is really different than all the other. The Francois Louise is very good and also I have the Vandoren Optimun which ist very good (it comes with 3 different plates). But this Marc Jean 2 is amazign, the sound is much more robust, solid. It is hard to explain, and I don´t know if a recording would capture this difference. It is now "my" ligature.
I love it!
