For years, meeting my mom was something I thought about, wondered about and imagined in a hundred different ways.
When it finally happened, there were no tears. No dramatic reunion. Mostly, there was awkwardness.
And surprisingly, I was okay with that.
We were two people with a very complicated history trying to get to know each other in real time.
The conversations that happened afterward were probably even more important than the first meeting itself.
I learned that she didn’t know how hard parts of our childhood had been. She shared some of the guilt and regret she carried, and I was able to tell her that, as an adult, I understand more about why she made the choices she did.
I also learned that there were years when both sides were waiting.
She would sometimes stop reaching out, hoping my sister and I would make the first move.
Meanwhile, I wasn’t consciously choosing not to contact her. I just... didn’t.
Now I try to check in every day. Sometimes it’s just a hello. Sometimes I send pictures. We’re slowly building something that never really had the chance to exist before.
I don’t know exactly what our relationship will look like years from now.

But I do know that I’m really happy I finally got to meet her. ❤️

You may both be waiting for the other person to make the first move. Sometimes one small ‘hi’ can be the beginning of something you thought you had missed forever.

Every day is basically, “Why are you climbing that?” “What’s in your mouth?” and “PLEASE get down.”
If everyone makes it to bedtime in one piece, I’m calling that a successful day. 😂
