On this National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, all of us at WCOPA Canada want to share a message with you. Today, we remember and learn about the history of Indigenous communities in Canada, especially the hardships many families faced due to residential schools.
This day is so important because it helps us understand the past and reminds us to respect Indigenous cultures, languages, and traditions. We want to honour your strength and the way you’ve stayed connected to your roots, even through challenges.
This year, we’re especially proud to celebrate the 7 Indigenous delegates who joined Team Canada 2024 at the World Championships of Performing Arts in Long Beach, California, U.S.A. last July—a truly historic occasion. These talented individuals not only represented their communities well but also took home medals and awards for their incredible performances. Some of them have been actually noticed by Hollywood professionals and have already signed up for management offers from them. They’re flying back to California soon. They’ve shown the world just how vibrant and talented Indigenous communities are, and we couldn’t be prouder of their achievements!
Today is a special day. We know that today’s national celebration isn’t enough to fix everything, but it’s a step toward making things right. Together, we can work for a future where your voices are always heard, and your communities are respected and celebrated.
We stand with you today and every day as we move forward on this journey of healing.
With respect and solidarity,
WCOPA Canada
