The abuses that First Nation Children faced along with their families and the genocide that occurred is nothing to take lightly. National Day for Truth and Reconciliation is not a holiday or a celebration, but a day to reflect, learn, and take action against the atrocities that took place. So tomorrow, take the opportunity to join in on an activity in your First Nation communities around you read a book about First Nation Culture, or watch a program about Indian Residential Schools.

I was heartbroken and angered watching the news yesterday at the denialism directed at the people of Tk'emlúps te Secwépemc and at all Residential School Survivors and their families. These words are painful, and they reopen deep wounds, especially in the days leading up to National Truth and Reconciliation Day.

Racism and hatred are nothing new to our communities. Our people have endured generations of colonialism, the taking of our lands, and attempts to erase our identity, language, culture, and connection to the land. Our people are still here across Turtle Island, and we will not be intimidated. We condemn the actions of these white nationalist and supremacist groups, and we will not stand by while they try to deny or minimize the truth of what happened to the children at Residential Schools.
