Its been a while since I've posted on here or edited a picture. Photographing landscapes is still something I love but when I moved to BC, I found myself taking photos for the sake of the moment & not social media. I found I hit a creative rut, but after take a long break away from social media, im slowly getting back into editing photos & sharing some of my BC adventures. These are the 3 architecture styles of Downtown, St johns.
First is Southcott Style, second empire architecture that started after the great fire in St . John's, by John Thomas Southcott. It's distinctive elements are the hooded dormer windows, mansard roof and bay windows. Found on jellybean row houses as well.

Then later in 1900s, came the Anne revival style with large bay windows, decorations and turrets for large exclusive homes.

After that they started designing simple, quick construction homes with flat roofs, and a mixture of two styles, seen on the famous jellybean row houses.

Heres why St. John's, newfoundland has a special charm. Its the first British colonial capital amongst canadian provinces and a lot of that history is still present in the architecture & culture today.

There's a distinct style from the rest of canada with colourful Victorian and wooden hipped-roof houses.

But in 1892 the great fire destroyed over half of the city and the work of John Thomas Southcott, architect from England, rebuilt most of the architecture. This is the Second Empire style architecture & is what's largely noticeable today.
