In 1918, Corporal Thomas Pittman, present on the front lines during the Battle of Beaumont Hamel, posed for this statue which was sculpted by Captain Basil Gotto. The monument was unveiled on September 13, 1922 in Bowring Park as a memorial to the Newfoundland soldiers who fought in World War I. Last week I saw a post of one of William Rennie's watercolours. I believe it was Robinson's Hill. It reminded me that I had restored several of his prints some time ago and never posted them. The colours are true to the originals. These are part of a collection of 49 prints presented to Caroline Withers on the occasion of her marriage to Reverend Henry Dunfield on Oct 10th, 1978. This one was fun to restore and colour. This is the first motorized vehicle owned by St. John's City Council. This image is taken at the corner of Adelaide Street and Water Street, circa 1915. Civic 334-344 Water Street are shown. Sitting on the steam roller is William Taylor, believed to be the first operator of a City mechanized vehicle. James Snooks is leaning against the steam roller. Two other Council employees standing at the right of the photo. Check the comments to see the original before restoration.. Original photo courtesy of City of St. John's archives Photo #:07-04-001. Original included.

Still on the theme of outdoor pools, here is one I restored and coloured of swimming in Bowring Park's Southbrook pool in the 1940s. The pool opened in the 1920's. Due to concerns of water pollution, the pool was closed by City of St. John's in the 1960's. Picture provided by C. Rusted. Enjoy this restoration? Dip anyone? Rennies River pool in 1945. (colourized) I knew there was a pool but did not realize the extent to which it was developed. Unfortunately it closed in 1953 due to the polio outbreak. One of my favourite pics to restore\colour.

Here’s a follow-up to my previous resettlement post. Here, Malcolm Rogers is walking onto shore after bringing a house to Dover in 1961. The haze in the background is due to a forest fire that was burning at the time.
