The Newfoundland & Labrador Folk Arts Society is facing some financial troubles right now and the 50th Folk Festival seems like a long ways away. As a former board member and constant volunteer, I would be damned to see no more Folk Festivals. A wonderful group of former board members have stepped up to help save the Newfoundland and Labrador Folk Festival. Here’s my thoughts on the whole thing and why you should consider supporting the Newfoundland & Labrador Folk Arts Society!

Another big loss in the local music community today. Shocked and saddened to hear about the passing of John Hutton. I remember this conversation from Churchill Park Music Festival very much and we were shooting the s**t on music and talking about my dad and now both of you are gone. I can only imagine the chat you guys will be having on the other side!

He was such a down to earth human being and loved music and talking about it! He will be sorely missed.

What a great week this has been. I’ve been getting back out to see some great local shows and it’s the most since dad passed away. Dad would have wanted me to have been out and networking with all these great people and it feels so good to be out again enjoying some phenomenal local talent. No better way to wrap up this week than celebrating With Violet’s new album “With Friends”! Thank to Spencer and the rest of the group for the invite!

What a great time tonight to see my first show at the Battery Cafe! Darcy Scott, Janeil Chantelle, and Selina Boland all provided some great music for a fine crowd at this wonderfully intimate venue. Give them some love by following their social media, purchasing their merchandise, or attending shows like these!

Crazy to believe it’s been a year already since we lost Mark Hiscock. He was always down to earth and a true champion of our music and the culture of Newfoundland and Labrador. We miss you every day, Marky.

I figure I would post this photo from MusicNL week last year because I’ve been struggling for a while on how to respond to my absence from the Musical Connections podcast over the past four months. Hope this will do it justice.

I originally had planned to return as soon as possible following the posting of my top 25 of 2025 in albums and New Found Releases. Little did I know how time consuming all of that would be. I got it finished around early January and I had plans to record both episodes and start to schedule interviews for the new year, but what was a lingering cloud over my head was my dad’s declining health. As most people know already, he was diagnosed with two forms of cancer. State 4 Advanced Prostate and High-Grade Neuroendocrine Carcinoma. After a month making hospital visits, he passed away on February 23rd. It’ll be two months as of this week and it’s still so hard to believe he’s not here anymore.

I will not apologize for taking care of my family because if not for them, I would not be here right now. I will apologize for not following through on delivering content that I promised and announced. As it comes to the Musical Connections podcast, I have no idea when it will be coming back. Losing a quarter of the year already sucks. How it looks when I do bring it back is still up in the air. I have five interviews remaining from MusicNL week that I haven’t put out yet but I’m not sure how timely they are since they were recorded in November and it’s almost May. I might put them out yet, they may never air. It’s a lot to consider so I’m going to need more time before I make any calls on Musical Connections.

However, it doesn’t mean that this podcast is done. My dad would want this to carry on because of how much it has changed my life and that I will do!

I haven’t been out to events much since the start of the year so it felt good to get out today and be out where I’m most comfortable and that’s connecting with our music scene. If you want to find a bigger fan of our music than me, look no further than Ricky Dalton. He held his ninth annual Janeway fundraiser this weekend and it was a pleasure to be there to support a man who is one of our biggest supporters of music in the industry today! I’m looking forward to seeing you front of the stage at the festivals this year, Ricky!
