Collaboration is at the HEART of the Discover Rural Directory and on the blog today we have an inspiring story of collaboration between Gemma and Kayla .

When these two rural entrepreneurs discovered each other - magic happened! Head to the link in our bio to read their story - we know it will get you thinking about collaboration in a whole new way!

WHEN ASKED:
“Why do you think collaborations with other rural women are important?”

‘Connecting with other rural women is crucial to maintaining a healthy mind. Running a small farm and agri-tourism business can be amazing and exciting but also overwhelming and isolating at times so it’s really special to be able to connect with other women running small businesses on their own too. The more we can share each other’s struggles (and successes), the less alone we might feel.’ - Gemma

We couldn’t agree more Gemma!

Our Origin Story

We love sharing this story, of how this all got started, because it takes us right back to the heart of why we do what we do. If you’re new around here, we’re Jan and Erin - a mother and daughter team who 4 years ago… had a big idea. It all started with chicken eggs actually. We are lucky enough to live rurally on the prairies of Western Canada, and with an abundance of farm fresh eggs, Erin wanted to post in a local FB group looking to sell some eggs, after being denied as we don’t live within city limits, feeling pretty frustrated but then insanely curious, we asked ourselves - “How many other rural women have businesses, services, goods and incredible products that no-one knows about?…. and it was that question that catapulted us into where we are today! We immediately launched a directory, back in 2020 and started sharing on this IG account all the amazing rural women and their businesses, it took off fast, as there was no-one out there representing this niche community like we were - celebrating, acknowledging and connecting us all to each other. The Directory at the time became a stepping stone into launching what was always a secret dream on our heart - to launch a premium, keepsake coffee table magazine. With sheer guts and a ton of hard work we launched our first issue of Trailblazher Magazine Trailblazher Co. - sharing the lives, businesses, know-how and wisdom of rural women across North America. It absolutely took off, so much so that the Directory had to take a back seat.

Four years later, here we are. Poised to launched a new evolution of community through our new Discover Rural Directory - a self-serve platform designed to facilitate the incredible connections and collaborations that collide when resilient, gutsy rural women find and support each other. Much more details to come but here is what we need you to do:

Today we are introducing the inventor and designer of innovative kitchen savers, Jennifer Pedersen. Jennifer is a mom to a 23 year old daughter, two dogs and two kittens. Jennifer lives on an acreage in the Foothills of Alberta where she runs her small business SugarBaby Brown Sugar Saver . She tells us that she feels most at home with a cup of tea and a good book, and uses her creative outlets of writing, poetry and photography to stay in tune with her creative nature.

Jennifer says that she knew there had to be a better way to store items that can be a struggle to store-like brown sugar! The hassle of buying a bag of brown sugar and going back to use it in a few weeks, just to have it as hard as a rock. The sugar baby saver designed by Jennifer, keeps items that need just a touch of moisture, fresher for longer! Jennifer saw a need for this product and took it upon herself to create it.

Jennifer explains that she has always loved the peace and quiet of living on an acreage. It is such a blessing to be able to enjoy and appreciate the beauty of nature every day. She goes on to tell us how amazing it feels to be a part of a community of local markets. It just feels like home to her.

Jennifer would like to ask all you guys, “What is your favourite thing about the community where you live rurally?”

Ok Ladies, today we are introducing another amazingly talented woman, who is the heart and soul of her business, Zoe Kendall Photography. Zoe describes herself as an avid coffee lover, and lover for all things Boho and Western. Head over to her page and explore, and if you're in the area, get yourself a new photographer! 📸

Zoe is from Beiseker, Alberta, she grew up on an acreage with her family who are horse trainers. Being raised around the western lifestyle, helped shape the vision she wanted for her photography business. She uses her photography as an outlet to showcase all things rural. Zoe tells us that she has been passionate about photography since her teen years and began to pursue it more seriously in the past year which has kept her more than busy. It mainly started when Zoe found herself wanting to keep busy during the pandemic, and thought it was a perfect time to create this small business and take her passion to the next level. Zoe says she uses this as a great way to meet other rural women that are passionate about what they do. It is an opportunity to support one another and work together to make this a strong rural community of women. Honestly what a great way to connect, I know we talk about connection and how you connect with other rural women but it is so IMPORTANT! Finding support groups, and women to discuss business, and business advice plays such an important role in running a rural operation.

Aaron Spence, is the owner and creator behind Dirt Road Collective , which is based out of their ranch, where she and her husband raise their three beautiful children. They have a mixed grain and purebred red angus farm, and while she loves her farm, she also dearly loves watching her kids play hockey and enjoy Saskatchewan lake days in the summer!

Aaron tells us that she started Dirt Road Collective after many years of graphic designing for print and web, she had a dream to bring her designs to life on apparel and it was the perfect change for her and since then, her business has taken off. She runs her business strictly online, but does offer local pickup! Running her business online works for her family because they are a hard working rural family, with many other day to day tasks. Many of Aaron's designs show how passionate she is about rural life. Whether it is wheat heads, cow skulls or grain elevators. All of her favourite things, made into her own work that people can purchase! 🌾

Aaron would like to ask you guys, “Were you all raised in rural areas or did you move there later in life and learn to love it?” This is such a good question, we know MANY women who have adapted to rural life and fell in love with it. So tell us your story down below! 😊

Today we have the honour of introducing Brittany Topilko. 😊️Brittany is the heart of Spring road farms (www.springroadfarms.com), where they are currently located in Sturgeon county. Brittany and her husband are expanding their farm from just 7 acres to 34! Brittany is the sole income of their small family while her husband takes on the big project of building their home in Water Valley.

Brittany describes her life as a small family with big dreams, and taking it upon themselves to shift to a simpler, more meaningful life. Her husband lost his corporate job of 12 years in 2020 which sparked a shift in their priorities, and she goes on to say it's been the best thing that could have ever happened to them. Their family is downsizing, and laying down some roots in the forest of grizzly country, where they are creating a livable spot where we can thrive with animals and gardens. Spring Road Farms is a small business, but has a lot to offer. From her website, you can purchase her beautifully created apparel, contact her about purchasing gorgeous colourful farm fresh eggs, and more. Be sure to check them out!

Brittany says the reason she loves rual is because she loves living simply - growing and raising their own food and putting their whole hearts in the operation. “It brings us so much joy to provide our family and friends with food that was grown and raised with love.” She's truly a rural woman at heart, creating a business from the ground up, all the while raising and taking care of her family.

We asked Brittany that if she could ask the trailblazher community one question, what would it be? And her asked, “What inspires you?”. Be sure to tell us below! There are so many things in a day we can gather inspiration from, and we want to hear a few from you? 🤍🤍

The Rural Collective

Welcome to the Rural Collective … the first and only online community for enterprising, rural women from Canada, the USA and Australia! The Rural Collective is about connection, support and learning. It was created to help rural women grow viable and sustainable businesses and passion projects they can showcase to their communities and the world.

Cultivated out of a passion for helping women in business - the Rural Collective is run by entrepreneurs Jan Johnson, Erin Johnson and Meagan Saum. Not big on doing things the conventional way… these friends have put their minds and hearts together to figure out how to help rural women entrepreneurs, like themselves, bring their ideas and dreams successfully out into the world. Determined to break new ground helping rural women feel inspired and empowered – they also plan to kick up a little dust along the way with this unique collaboration and signature offering!

The mission for the Rural Collective is to provide rural women entrepreneurs with real and tangible resources to help them live your best life and develop and grow a financially viable business venture. We recognize the challenges that come with the isolation and the often limited resources that exist when one lives outside of an urban centre, and we intend to bridge the gap through our offerings.

Through the Rural Collective Directory, the Rural Collective Membership, and the member-contributed New Pioneers Magazine - we’ll help rural women cultivate wholehearted businesses and connect them with other gutsy women who are entrepreneurs in these changing times - New Pioneers! Are you ready to join in?
