LACKING RESOURCES FORCES LOCAL NEWSPAPER TO PAUSE PUBLISHING
OWNER CALLS ON BUSINESS ORGANIZATIONS AND GOVERNMENT TO CONTINUE R+R EFFORTS
Unama’ki/CBRM - It is with deep regret and great sadness that the owner of The Third Publishing Inc. is announcing that she has decided to pause immediately the publishing of both the print and digital editions of the weekly newspaper The Third.
The paper has struggled since shortly after its inception to find the required HR and can no longer continue without fundamental team members.
The paper’s graphic designer, Ashin Wilfy, will soon graduate from CBU and later this month is starting an exciting journey as he begins his career. Despite a seven-month search, the paper has not been able to find a dedicated salesperson.
“Graphic designers are as elusive as family physicians in the Third,” says Coffin. “I searched for more than six months in 2022 and 2023 before I finally – and fortunately – found Ashin,” says Coffin.
She admits that without a salesperson the paper was unable to grow and with the loss of her graphic designer it is impossible to continue.
“The model for the paper relied heavily on the business community recognizing the service The Third was providing to the wider community by offering free weekly local news and comprehensive events listings,” says Coffin. “Not having a team member dedicated to knocking on the doors of those businesses hindered too much the paper’s ability to grow.”
Coffin is calling on the local business organizations and municipal leadership to continue to address the limited resources available to businesses in the area.
“I believe that with the right HR The Third would have grown into a successful local paper,” she says. “I hope future start-ups don’t have the resource challenges we experienced. When you can’t find them, you have no choice but to shutter the windows.”
The Third was published in print and online every Thursday beginning July 27, 2023, until February 29, 2024. It was distributed throughout the larger communities of CBRM and available at popular destinations throughout the municipality.
The Third Publishing Inc. will explore other options.
Coffin and the team at The Third want to thank readers.
“While we couldn’t find the human resources, we did find a loyal and dedicated readership,” says Coffin. “We are so sad to have to take this pause. We will miss you and the connections between us that were possible because of The Third. Thank you all so very much for reading from the bottom of our hearts.”
