David Brandy is an award-w

inning lens-based artist. Brandy's artistic mantra is, "Beauty can be strange and the strange can be beautiful." His passion as an artist is to present man-altered landscapes with the uncanny – the psychological experience of something strangely familiar. His ongoing series, "Newer Topographics", emphasizes the strong sense of isolation humankind feels due to the juxtaposition of natural landscapes with solitary manmade constructs. Brandy’s work was sort-listed for the 2021 Aesthetica Art Prize with an exhibition at York Art Gallery, UK. He received an Emerging Artists by Emerging Curator Award at the 2019 Toronto Outdoor Art Fair. His art sold over-asking in the Curatorial Collection at SNAP 2019 - Toronto’s premier fine art photography auction. He was a short-listed finalist in both the Quest Art 2018 National Art Prize, and the 2017 Salt Spring National Art Prize. Brandy’s art hangs in his collectors’ residences and in commercial space across North America.

Last week, U.S. President Donald Trump fired Kennedy Center chair David Rubinstein and the board of trustees, so that he could take over as chair of the institution instead.

Since the announcement, multiple speakers and performers who were booked prior to the ouster have pulled out of their events at the venue in protest of the change, even though the opportunity to perform at the Kennedy Center would be a career highlight for many artists.

Today on Commotion, Métis singer-songwriter Amanda Rheaume and Canadian best-selling author Louise Penny talk to guest host Rad Simonpillai about why they chose to cancel their appearances at the prestigious venue.

How freakin' great is this classic St. Germain album? It's one of my all-time favs, and I've been listening to it on repeat tonight while working on some images. So, as the sample of Marlena Shaw's vocals ring out to a sped-up sample from Brubeck's Take Five, remember her lyrical words of advice, "I want you to get together. Put your hands together one time." (for the new David Brandy Photography website launching next week! www.davidbrandy.com) 😉

When visiting one tends to get a bit “artsy”. 😉

Artists Statement / Biography

David Brandy is an award-winning contemporary fine art photographer.

Brandy captures transient moments that reflect the concept of “The Uncanny” (Das Unheimliche). The uncanny is the psychological experience of something as strangely familiar. It may describe incidents where a familiar thing or event is encountered or seen in an unsettling context.

The uncanny locates the strangeness in the ordinary. So too does Brandy's art – evoking a sense of being both beautiful and strange. His photographs of familiar objects or places reflect a splendour that we seldom notice while living in a hectic world filled with distraction. Hence his artistic mantra; beauty can be strange and the strange can be beautiful.

Brandy began his creative career with a BA in Radio and Television Arts from Ryerson University. His practice has evolved from radio copywriter and producer, to Founder and Creative Director of a live events agency, to photographic storyteller.
