"I always say that there's two types of photos. There's photos that you make and there's photos that you take," says professional photographer and videographer Chad Kirvan.

In this month's A Thousand Words, we feature a familiar name to Walleye readers who certainly deserves a moment in the spotlight. Kirvan is the mastermind behind many a Walleye cover, and if you've attended any local festivals and events, you've likely seen him at work-making and taking photos of both the people performing and in the crowd.

Read more about Kirvan's people-first approach to photography on page 44 of the June issue. Story by Sidney Ulakovic, photos by Kirvan Photography, link below👇

Chad Kirvan, whose work encompasses everything from staged photography like corporate headshots and family portraits to more candid shots at concerts and festivals. Regardless of the occasion, Kirvan has mastered the ability to capture people authentically.

Cover reveal!⚡️🎨The June issue is here and we’re taking another stab at tattoos 🖋️🌹⛓️

Though tattoos shifted from counterculture to mainstream in the late 90s, the history of tattooing is hardly skin deep. The oldest known tattoos date back thousands of years and since then, tattooing has evolved and expanded to become its own artform. This issue of The Walleye explores all things ink as told through the diverse perspectives and styles of our many local tattoo artists. From the historical roots of traditional tattoos to the delicate art of fine line ink, each discipline has its own way of bringing the ink bearer’s vision to life. Whether you’re currently planning your next session or starting to question that lower back tattoo, there’s no judgement here. No Ragrets!

Pick up your hard copy around town later this week or read the digital issue online (link here: https://www.thewalleye.ca/digital-magazine).

Last Saturday marked another successful year of recognizing the Northern writing community with the Northwestern Ontario Writers Workshop (NOWW) awards gala, the conclusion to their annual LitFest celebration of literary arts in the region. The 28th annual gala celebration took place at the Italian Cultural Centre, where David Giuliano and Laughing Fox, a writing collective, were both acknowledged for their contributions to the literary landscape of Northern Ontario and continued support of the writing community.

There's a new name in your inbox!⭐️

We're excited to officially welcome Alistair Mariz to The Walleye sales team.

Alistair is relatively new to town but quickly found inspiration in what Thunder Bay has to offer. He is a professional cellist, playing with the Thunder Bay Symphony Orchestra during their latest season and founding the Sibley String Quartet, an ensemble you may have seen performing around the community.

Now that he's joined The Walleye team, Alistair is eager to further connect with local businesses and artists to help share their stories and make an impact across our plattorms.

Say hello to him and the comments and get in touch by email at [email protected]👋

Every local restaurant has at least one of them…a dish you can only get if you’ve got the inside scoop🤫

This month we went to the Tilted Turret in search of The Steph, named for the pub’s longest-running server🍻

The Steph is a Tilted Turret take on chicken and waffles consisting of chicken tenders and flippers, the pub’s signature dessert. It’s a dish that shouldn’t work, yet absolutely does—the kind of sweet-and-salty collision that foodie dreams are made of🤤💭

We’ll be trying secret menu items all year long👀🍴Know somewhere we should go next? Let us know!👇

What would the May long weekend be without the traditional running of the 10-Mile Road Race?

The 10-Mile Road Race has endured because it is “woven within the fabric of the community and is the longest running 10-mile road race in Canada,” says race director Herbert Daniher. Multigenerational participation, around 3000 enthusiastic spectators, and roughly 250 volunteers help maintain its prestige.

It's been said that the only constant in nature is that it's ever-changing, and that quality is precisely what draws artist Angela Wiebe to landscape painting.

"Northwestern Ontario is full of vibrant colour, texture, and untamed beauty," Wiebe says. "And I try to bring harmony to the way the elements interact with each other."

With their upcoming performance, Embody Dance Collective asks, "What happens when you let go of who you're supposed to be and step into who you really are?" 🎭🤫

Their May 9 showcase, Alter Ego, will feature more than 60 dancers performing the entirely original choreography they have been perfecting over the past 16 weeks. When asked what people can expect from the show, director Emma Dubinsky and choreographer Maddy Bouvier share a knowing laugh and answer: "so much."
