"I think it was the idea of art and science mixing together," says Heather Peden of her fascination with photography that started in her high school graphic design class. "There's just something kind of magical about it that I very much enjoyed." Years later, she chose the name lightsifting for her Instagram account as a way of describing the way light illuminates and interacts with the natural world, in a way that stops her in her tracks.

Read more about how Peden blends art and science as she captures the natural world on page 42 of the November issue. Story by bonnieschiedel, photos by lightsifting, link here: https://www.flipsnack.com/ECA8CECC5A8/november-2025/full-view.html?p=42

How do you catch a tone without caging it?
Honour a voice without swallowing it? How do you make shapes speak, shadows laugh, and silence hold its breath?

10 years ago, we attempted to answer some of these questions with the arrival of a poetry submission and an idea to pair it with a tailored illustration by visual artist boy Roland. The words began to leap off the page, and since then, it has become a monthly ritual—this conversation that plays out between the written and visual.

In honour of the last 10 years of celebrating the voices and stories unique to the region, we present Field Notes for Translating Ghosts: A Decade of Quiet Conversations, an anthology that features a selection of written works-from poems, to short stories, to song lyrics-originally published in The Walleye over the last decade alongside boy Roland's visual explorations.
We'll be launching Field Notes for Translating Ghosts on November 15 at 6 pm at Co. Lab Gallery, where you'll be able to see a selection of works and purchase the book.

Books will be available for preorder at a special price as part of a limited-time launch offer on The Walleye website (link here: https://www.thewalleye.ca/shop/p/field-notes-for-translating-ghosts-a-decade-of-quiet-conversations) and remain up for purchase afterwards while quantities last.

There is no such thing as just one mixtape in a music collection. That’s why we’re happy to present another mixtape edition for The Walleye’s 14th annual Sounds of the City issue, this time with a rock/pop flavour. Here in TBay, we’re so fortunate to have talented musicians who can tug at heartstrings, get down, and tear it up in venues all over town and on our personal playlists too. Check out the inspiration behind the original songs from these eight hardworking local acts... and get ready to rock!

Pick up your hard copy around town or read the digital issue online (link here: https://www.thewalleye.ca/digital-magazine).

A trip to Barbados in the winter of 2023 and the opportunity to watch a man make jewellery on the beach using freshwater pearls was just the inspiration Thunder Bay's Maya Ekman needed to launch her own line of beaded treasures under Sol Pärlor solparlor.

Justine Gustafson is an Anishinaabe kwe from Whitesand First Nation, Ont. based in Thunder Bay. She is an emerging Indigenous artist who works full time as a beader, recognized for her creative talent by peers, curators, fashion designers, and master bead workers. Agawaatebiigisin (it's reflected in the water) is a major new acquisition to the Thunder Bay Art Gallery featuring Gustafson's beaded bag by the same name alongside new beaded garments, accessories, and bags.

Following a six-year hiatus, the City of Thunder Bay Arts & Heritage Awards made their return last night onstage at Magnus Theatre, where nominees and the public were invited to honour the artistic talent, dedication, and achievements across artistic disciplines.
