May 10th is World Lupus Awareness Day
Lupus is a chronic autoimmune disease where the body's immune system damages its own tissues and organs. Swelling and irritation associated with the condition can affect your skin, joints, brain, heart, lungs, kidneys, and other organs. A common sign of lupus is a butterfly-shaped facial rash across the nose and cheeks.
Lupus is not an infection, nor is it contagious. It belongs to the same family of inflammatory diseases as multiple sclerosis and rheumatoid arthritis. Certain medications, infections, or even sunlight can trigger it. Although there is no cure for lupus, treatments can help manage symptoms such as joint pain, shortness of breath, fever, headache, swollen glands and Raynaud’s syndrome.
