I want to tell you a little about my new book, When Is It Too Late? Holocaust Lessons on Risk, Decision Making, and the Failure to Act, and why I wrote it.
October 7 changed the way many Jews think about antisemitism, safety and what the future may hold. It also raises some difficult questions.
How do we recognize when conditions around us are changing? When does concern become danger? And at what point does waiting for certainty become a risk in itself?
Those questions are at the heart of this book.
We know what happened to the Jews of Europe because we know how the story ended. They didn’t. They were living their lives while conditions around them were changing, trying to understand what was temporary, what was dangerous, and when it was time to act.
When Is It Too Late? uses the lessons of the Holocaust, particularly what happened to Hungarian Jews in 1944, to examine those same questions in the post–October 7 world. It is not an argument that Canada today is Europe in the 1930s or 1940s. It is about what history can teach us about recognizing deteriorating conditions before we know where they will lead.
If you have been thinking about antisemitism, Jewish safety and what has changed since October 7, I believe you will find this book thought-provoking.
History does not have to repeat itself for its warnings to matter.
