Barbara Ann Scott made Canadian Olympic history on imperfect ice 🇨🇦⛸️

At just 19, the Ottawa figure skater arrived at the 1948 Winter Olympics as a world champion. In St. Moritz, the shared ice had become badly rutted after figure skating and hockey events.

Scott adjusted her free skate, changing where she landed her jumps to use cleaner sections of ice.

The strategy worked.

She won gold, becoming Canada’s first Winter Olympic champion in a sport other than hockey and the first Canadian figure skater to win Olympic gold.

Canada’s Arctic surveillance upgrade is also creating a major economic opportunity 🇨🇦🛰️

Canada is investing $2.5 billion in Over the Horizon Radar technology through a defence partnership with Australia. The system is designed to detect aircraft and maritime activity approaching Canada’s northern and Arctic regions from much greater distances.

Federal estimates indicate the project could support about 2,270 Canadian jobs annually from 2026 to 2033 and contribute nearly $290 million a year to Canada’s GDP.

Canadian companies are also expected to build expertise in operating, maintaining and advancing the technology.

A new Canadian trade gateway has opened in British Columbia 🇨🇦🚢

The Portland Canal Marine Terminal near Stewart is B.C.’s first majority Indigenous owned port, through a partnership involving the Nisg̱a’a Nation, Tahltan Nation Development Corporation and Arrow Transportation Systems.

Located near the mineral rich Golden Triangle, the deep sea terminal could help move Canadian resources such as copper concentrate to international markets.

The project brings together Indigenous ownership, critical minerals and new export opportunities for Canada.

In 2017, the Royal Canadian Mint released the “Dance of the Spirits” $2 coin for Canada’s 150th anniversary.

It became the world’s first glow in the dark circulation coin, with 3 million released into circulation across Canada.

Canada’s Great Lakes fleet is growing again 🇨🇦🚢

The Canadian Coast Guard has welcomed CCGS Judy LaMarsh, the first additional large vessel added to its Great Lakes fleet in more than 30 years.

Based in Prescott, Ontario, the vessel will support icebreaking and buoy tending across the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence River, helping keep this major Canadian trade route safe and navigable.

The ship is named after Judy LaMarsh, a former federal cabinet minister and notable figure in Canadian public life.

In 1985, Hansen left Vancouver in a wheelchair with a goal to travel around the world. Over 26 months, he and his team covered more than 40,000 kilometres across 34 countries.

Canada’s auto industry remains heavily connected to the U.S. market 🇨🇦🚗

More than 90% of Canadian made vehicles are exported to the United States, along with about 60% of Canadian made auto parts. The sector supports more than 500,000 workers, including around 125,000 direct manufacturing jobs.

With U.S. tariffs creating new pressure, Mark Carney’s strategy includes up to $3 billion from the Strategic Response Fund to help companies retool, improve productivity and reach new markets.

The goal is to strengthen Canada’s auto industry while reducing its dependence on a single market.
