Canadiens playoffs aspirations suffer a major blow
By Neil Becker

The Montreal Canadiens slim playoff hopes have taken a thunderous hit.
Finding themselves in great danger of missing post-season s for a fourth straight season the Canadiens, who are one point out, suffered a recent major blow when on Saturday, February 22nd during a 5-2 win at the Canadian Tire Centre in Ottawa against the Senators, Canadiens forward Kirby Dach left early with what an apparent lower body injury only to have it be announced
that he would need season ending right knee surgery. This would be on the same knee which was operated on back in October 2023 when after the second game of the season he underwent season ending surgery.

Dach, who is 24 years-old was originally selected in 2019 3rd overall by the Chicago Blackhawks. Playing this year in his third season with Montreal, Dach has in 57 games played scored 10 goals along with 29 points prior to having his season end. Roughly with only about six weeks or so left in the regular season the Canadiens find themselves n a real dog battle with the
Detroit Red Wings, Ottawa Senators, Boston Bruins, Columbus Blue Jackets and New York Rangers for that last wildcard playoff spot.

No question the toughness and scoring depth took a major hit with this latest Dach injury setback. Looking to take advantage of an opportunity is 21- year-old forward and the team’s 22nd pick in the 2022 draft, Owen Beck.
Beck, who this season has scored 13 goals along with 32 points with the AHL’s Laval Rocket has so far in what is his third stint with the big club registered an assist in five games. In total this year with Montreal Beck has played in 11 games.

Penguins’ goalie Tristan Jarry looking to rediscover his game
By Neil Becker

Tristan Jarry’s tenure as the starting Pittsburgh Penguins goalie could be
coming to an end.
Up until about a year ago life was great for Jarry who over the years as
a Penguin established himself as a talented starting goalie who was in his second
year of a five-year $26.9 million dollar contract extension which was signed back
on July 1, 2023.
Not long after signing, no hockey fan could have foreseen what would happen with the 29- year-old two-time all-star goalie who late last year lost the starting job to back-up Alex Nedjelkovic and has struggled out of the gate by being yanked in two starts while sporting an unflattering 5.47 GAA along with a .836 save percentage.
Jarry, who in the 2019-20 campaign became the Penguins number goalie suffered arguably his lowest point as a Penguin on Friday, October 16th when at PPG Paints Arena he surrendered three first period goals on five shots before getting replaced in what was an eventual 6-5 Penguins OT win.
If that wasn’t bad enough things got worse for Jarry who recently was sent home from the team’s western Canada road trip to work on his game with the Penguins director of goaltending Jon Elkin.
“The first couple of starts that he had haven’t been his best,” Penguins coach Mike Sullivan said. “I’m probably stating the obvious when I say that. But it’s our responsibility to help players through some of the struggles they inevitably go through in this league, and Tristan is no different.”
The news got even worse for Jarry who a few days later got demoted to the AHL’s Wilkes Barre Scranton Penguins where on Saturday, October 26th he was solid in stopping 32 shots during a 3-2 road win against the Syracuse Crunch.
According to Jarry’s contract, he can only be sent down for 14 days until he must be recalled.
In his career this seasoned veteran from Surrey British Columbia has played in 257 games where he has registered a 136-85-25 record along with a career average 2.70 G.A.A., a .912 save percentage and 19 shutouts.
He was also named and played in the 2020 and 2022 NHL All-Star Game.
Currently playing goal for the Penguins is Nedeljkovic and 22- year-old Joel Blomqvist.
Penguins’ fans and management alike can only hold their collective breath in anticipation that Jarry finds his game during his two- week stint in Wilkes Barre and comes back confident and playing solid in goal.

Avalanche forward Ross Colton off to a torrid start
By Neil Becker

Colorado Avalanche forward Ross Colton just keeps on producing.
This former Tampa Bay Lightning forward who is beginning his second season with the Avalanche
has gotten off to a torrid start which after six games finds him in a three -way tie for second in the league with six goals scored.

Colton, who finds himself playing with Nathan MacKinnon and Mikko Rantanen on the team’s first line enjoyed arguably his best game on Sunday, October 20th when during a 4-1 win at SAP Center against the San Jose Sharks, this 28- year-old made his presence known by producing four shots on goal while delivering two hits and scoring two goals.

So far in the early season, Colorado have dealt with injuries and inconsistency but Colton, who is 28 years-old has with his strong play emerged as a real surprise.
Last season this 2021 Stanley Cup winner with Tampa Bay definitely made a solid impression during his first year with the Avalanche when he scored 17 goals along with a career best 40 points.

Besides scoring Colton can also play physical as he led the Avalanche during last springs playoffs with 43 hits.
So far this season Colton has scored three power-play goals and has accumulated seven points and has been a positive in a tough start to the season which has seen the Avalanche after seven games get off to a less than ideal 3-4 record.

October has been the perfect time for Colton to get hot as the Avalanche are currently missing some of their gifted offensive forwards such as Jonathan Drouin, Valeri Nichushkin and Artturi Lehkonen.

Originally drafted by the Lightning in 2016 118th overall, Colton played three seasons with them and had his biggest moment in the spring of 2021 when he became the seventh U.S. born player to score the Stanley Cup winning goal which came in Game 5 against the Montreal Canadiens to make the Lightning back-to-back Stanley Cup champions.

Colton, who wasn’t on the 2020 Stanley Cup winning team, was just before the 2023 NHL Entry Draft traded to the Avalanche in exchange for a second- round pick. Heading into this season he has played 270 career games and has scored 64 goals along with 123 points while racking up 151 PIM’s.

With the Avalanche experiencing so many key injuries up front, Colton has really come through in the clutch with what after a month or so is shaping up to be a break -through season.
Time will tell if while playing on the first line with two studs, can continue to score at a rapid rate.

Today I received great news from Craig Campbell’s wife Iris…. Kerry today was very positive. Craig is still very sedated but not as confused any more. Swelling settling down and definitely recognising me. Albeit slow and short he has started speaking wanting his clothes to go home. Definitely a positive I would say.

Amazing. Spooly is a fighter!
