Have you ever felt this?

You know what you should do —
be patient, forgive, let go —
but in the moment, you still don't.

It's not that you don't love God.
It's not that you're not trying hard enough.

It's that between knowing and becoming,
there's a gap —
and very few people tell us how to cross it.

What is the content of the "Gospel"?

In the time of John the Baptist and Jesus, the content of the "Gospel" (good news) was "the kingdom of God is at hand." This was preached by John the Baptist (Matt. 3:2; Luke 3:18), Jesus (Mark 1:15; Matt. 9:35), and Jesus’ apostles (Matt. 10:7; Luke 9:2). The Lord’s Prayer: "Your kingdom come!"

The source of the "Gospel (good news)" comes from the prophecy of Isaiah (Mark 1:1-3). The good news is: 1) The Lord, God, has come to Jerusalem! (Isa. 40:9-11); 2) God reigns as King (Isa. 52:7)—in the past, the Israelites rejected God as their King (1 Sam. 8:7).

The arrival of the King signifies the coming of God’s kingdom. The King’s grand arrival naturally requires: 1) A forerunner to prepare and clear the way (Isa. 40:3; Mal. 3:1); 2) A response from the subjects: repentance = changing one’s mind and believing the gospel (Matt. 3:2; Mark 1:15), and "the obedience of faith" (Rom. 1:5; 16:26).

Breaking down Mark 1:15:
• "The time is fulfilled" = Isaiah’s prophecy, "This Scripture has been fulfilled today" (Luke 4:21).
• "The kingdom of God is at hand" = The content of the gospel.
• "Repent and believe in the gospel" = The required and proper response to the gospel.

Clearly, it was Paul who preached the gospel of Christ, the gospel of the kingdom of God (Acts 14:22, 20:25, 28:23, 31), not Jesus preaching "Paul’s gospel":

"I am astonished that you are so quickly deserting him who called you in the grace of Christ and are turning to a different gospel—not that there is another one, but there are some who trouble you and want to distort the gospel of Christ." (Gal. 1:6-7)

Question: In the long history of the church, who was the first to distort the gospel of Christ and preach a "different gospel"? "Who is this that darkens counsel by words without knowledge?" (Job 38:2) And what is the content of that "different gospel"?

My Personal Experience

A Chinese church organized an evangelistic event. During a discussion among the group leaders, someone raised the following question:

"One of the four Gospels even says that John the Baptist preached the 'gospel.' What was the content of the gospel he preached? When Jesus sent His disciples out two by two to preach, what was the content of their preaching? After all, at that time, Jesus had neither died nor been resurrected."

He was surprised that John the Baptist also preached the gospel, which is why he used the word "even." His question was based on an assumption: the content of the gospel should be related to Jesus' death and resurrection. Since Jesus had not yet died, what gospel was John the Baptist preaching?

Clearly, not only did Jesus preach the gospel, but John the Baptist did as well (Mark 1:15; Luke 3:18). The message that Jesus' apostles preached when sent out two by two was also the gospel (Mark 6:7-12; Luke 9:1-6).

With such clear records in the Gospels, why do so many Christians, including well-known pastors, remain confused about the basic concept of the "gospel"?

American New Testament scholar Scot McKnight talked about three instances in this video: 1) one reader asked him, “Why ‘Jesus is the Messiah’ is the gospel?” 2) A well-known pastor once raised the question, “Did Jesus preach Paul’s gospel?” and answered, “Yes, Jesus preached Paul’s gospel because he preached ‘justification by faith.’” 3) Another pastor claimed, “The gospel is: ‘justification by faith’!” and firmly stated, “Before Paul, no one understood the ‘gospel’; before Jesus’ resurrection and Pentecost, no one could have understood the ‘gospel’ … not even Jesus!” Question: What are your thoughts on this?

At a conference held by The Gospel Coalition, three well-known leaders and theologians—D.A. Carson, Timothy Keller, and John Piper—discussed the topic: "Did Jesus preach the gospel?" Questions: 1) What does this phenomenon reveal? 2) Do you think Jesus preached the gospel?

We frequently point to Jesus' work on the Cross but less often examine the content of his sermons. In this video: John Piper, Tim Keller, Don CarsonPermalink...

At the 2015 Ligonier Ministries National Conference, Dr. R.C. Sproul, the founder, shared that in his Doctor of Ministry program, he asked enrolled pastors to define the "gospel." He noted that he was pleased if even 10% of their answers were adequate.

The gospel is not about meaning, peace, or God’s plan for your life. It’s about Jesus. From Ligonier’s 2015 National Conference, R.C. Sproul and Sinclair Fer...
