Dozens protested outside Toronto City Hall this morning demanding a 1-year moratorium on AI data centres by passing an Interim Control By-law.
These bit factories drive the climate crisis, waste water and don't offer good jobs and sustainable communities. Two data centre proposals are being debated at Toronto City Council - in Scarborough (STACK Infrastructure) and in Etobicoke (Microsoft) this week.
Over 6,500 comments pushing for the moratorium were submitted through Common Horizon Toronto's link - Toronto residents can keep submitting comments at tinyurl.com/NoAIDataCentresTO

"Victory to the people! The historic student protests in India succeeded in bringing down the education minister of the Modi government, and have brought a renewed energy to the struggle.

Yesterday, community members in Toronto and supporters of the struggle got together to sing, dance, celebrate and to strengthen the movement forward!"

It was a great turnout for the "No more heat deaths" rally by Justicia and Injured Workers Action For Justice.
At least 8 migrant farm workers have died in Ontario over the past 2 weeks. These workers lack basic rights leaving them at risk of injury and death, while the multibillion dollar agricultural industry thrives.

Representatives from Public Service Alliance of Canada (PSAC), United Steelworkers (USW), United Food and Commercial Workers (UFCW), Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW), Asian Canadian Labour Alliance (ACLA), Service Employees Union International (SEIU) Local 2 and a contingent of striking Ontario Public Service Employees Union (OPSEU) workers brought solidarity.

An injury to one is an injury to all!

Over 50,000 were in attendance.

Since Tuesday, many more have joined the students in their protests that have now expanded across the country, as well as in cities like Toronto, Washington, and London.

Racist attacks on Indigenous people by the Smith government and the separatist movement in Alberta are trying to undermine Indigenous treaty and inherent land rights.

In late June, the Alberta Federation of Labour (AFL) issued a statement supporting Indigenous sovereignty struggles, including “acts of non-violent civil disobedience” which they called a “vital democratic tool.”

This is a tool for Alberta union activists to build active solidarity for Indigenous struggles, whether related to the separation referendum or not.

Provincial labour federations and the Canadian Labour Congress should follow the AFL lead and pledge solidarity with Indigenous sovereignty struggles across so-called Canada
