MDPI Subject Workshop | Advancing Tropical Forest Monitoring with Workshop Chair & Speaker Prof. Dr. Arturo Sanchez-Azofeifa

Accurately mapping tree species in tropical forests remains one of the greatest challenges in Earth observation. While hyperspectral remote sensing has transformed our ability to characterize forest composition, structural complexity and widespread liana infestation continue to complicate species identification and environmental monitoring.

At our upcoming Subject Workshop, "Earth Observation for a Sustainable Planet: Integrating Big Data, AI, and the Geosciences", Prof. Dr. Arturo Sanchez-Azofeifa from the University of Alberta’s Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences will present: "Can We Truly Map Tree Species in Tropical Forests?"

As Director of the Alberta Centre for Earth Observation Sciences (CEOS), Prof. Dr. Sanchez-Azofeifa's research combines remote sensing, IoT, wireless sensor networks, LiDAR, hyperspectral imaging, and more to better understand the impacts of climate change on tropical dry forest ecosystems. During his presentation, he will examine how hyperspectral spectroscopy and machine learning can overcome challenges associated with liana infestation, enabling more accurate tree species classification and advancing multi-layered monitoring of tropical forest dynamics.
