Canada is spending $4.7 billion to build 313 new VIA Rail passenger cars, marking the largest investment in the railway’s history 🚆

The cars will be built at Alstom’s Thunder Bay facility, replacing aging equipment that has been in service for decades.

The project is expected to create around 700 jobs, with the new fleet serving long-distance and remote routes across Canada. The first passenger cars are expected to be delivered in 2031.

The announcement comes after Canada also committed $1.6 billion to replace 45 aging VIA Rail locomotives earlier this year.

Canada’s labour market took a hit in August, losing 42,000 jobs as the unemployment rate remained unchanged at 6.4%. The decline came after the country added a combined 181,000 jobs between April and July 🇨🇦📉

Young Canadians were among those affected, with employment among people aged 15 to 24 falling by 19,000. Ontario also lost roughly 18,000 jobs, while Quebec lost 19,000.

Manufacturing was a bright spot, adding 22,000 jobs despite ongoing trade uncertainty, while average hourly wage growth slowed to 2% year-over-year. The latest numbers come as Canada faces renewed uncertainty surrounding U.S. tariffs and the strength of the economic rebound 🇨🇦💼

🇨🇦🇺🇸 **Canada–U.S. tariff tensions are escalating — but what does it actually mean for Canadians?**

The U.S. has imposed tariffs of up to **50% on approximately C$27.6 billion worth of Canadian goods.** Canada is responding with new counter-tariffs of **15%, 25% and 50% on selected U.S. products**, effective September 8.

So, will Canadians see higher prices?

Tariffs are paid by importers, not directly by consumers. But businesses may pass some of those additional costs on through higher prices.

The impact could be felt across:

✈️ A massive Russian cargo plane stranded at Toronto Pearson Airport since 2022 is staying put after a Federal Court judge rejected its owner’s latest challenge to Canadian sanctions.

The Antonov An-124 was grounded after Canada closed its airspace to Russian-owned aircraft following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Ottawa seized the aircraft in 2023 and has been pursuing forfeiture proceedings, while previously saying it intends to transfer the plane to Ukraine.

Volga- Dnepr Airlines is continuing its legal fight to regain control of the aircraft, but the latest ruling means the 225-foot-long plane remains parked at Pearson for now.
