🪷• PLR March Presents: Running Bodies II

〰️ Across the U.S. and beyond, there is a growing movement to restrict Trans athletes’
participation in sports, reinforcing rigid and exclusionary ideas of s*x and gender.

🎺LET IT BE KNOWN🎺

These attacks are not just about sports —they are about power, control, and the policing of bodies.

JOIN US THIS WOMEN’S HISTORY MONTH…

We’ll take a look at the history of this Running sport,
divided along binary lines, that recognizes difference as a fault and weakness.

Our intention: to remind folks that we must reach beyond these patriarchal standards & assumptions of bodies, so we may begin to discuss the real issues plaguing women in Running.

🏃🏾‍♀️ PLR Presents: Running, Disordered Eating & Eating Disorders

It’s 2025. We’ve been having this conversation since 2020, yet when you look at Running Media and Running Culture, discussions around disordered behaviors—whether in movement or eating—are still:

a) celebrated ✨
b) ignored 👀
c) inadequate 🤨

We’re here to change that. Loudly. Whether the algorithm likes it or not.

Starting with☝🏾What happens when we focus only on Diet Culture & Body Image?

We miss the stories of Black and racialized folks who engage in disordered eating not simply because of thinness, but as a means of survival within larger systems of oppression. These lived experiences get erased in favor of single-story narratives and “safe” conversations. We refuse to let that continue.
💭 Ready to rethink what you thought you knew about Disordered Eating (D.E) & Eating Disorders (E.D) in Running? Join us this month as we explore this topic & share more on PLR’s Running Practices.

🥞• PLR Food for thought:

Grieving is connected to loving deeply and living fully, especially for folks who face daily challenges and experience systemic harm.

This is not only personal but collective grief—

Grief that comes with letting go of false narratives (safety), injustice, body blame / shame

and yes, letting go of control.

📿• PLR Notes on Grief:

Consider how this Running Community could be different if it weren’t only about speed + progress, but about honouring our deepest emotions.

How might this shift affect the way we experience our relationships, with our bodies, each other… Running and Grief?

Our theme this month is designed to offer folks a space to Grieve. To slow down and process, and to deepen our connections, and Body awareness,

There are many ✨lessons✨ we can learn from leaning into Grief, and Loss [in Community].

For some of our Reflections ➡️ Keep Swiping.

✨• Dear Community,

In a world where we’re encouraged to constantly push forwards [Running], how do we make room for grief?

My teacher’s taught me that love and grief are sisters, and “to grieve is to be alive. To be human”

With our event this month, we wish to bear witness to the grief we carry with us as we move through life. We want to honour our bodies and their “wise ways of coping” in a world with multiple forms of violence.

Processing our losses in community, and supporting each other as we make sense of the all the loss and suffering around us.

This will be our last event of the year,
Join Us❣️

Our intention: to hold space for the full, complex experience of what it means to be alive and grieve in our bodies, in community.

☕️• PLR September Presents: Running in the Age of Ozempic:

| FACTS ABOUT WEIGHT LOSS DRUGS |

“ Weight loss injectable drugs slow the movement of food from the stomach into the small intestine, creating a feeling of fullness and satiety. As a result, you may feel full faster and full longer, so you eat less. They also make it hard to hear hunger cues (causing distrust of bodies).”

➡️How is PLR approaching the conversation?

Reality is people are trying to cope in a world that is oppressive, and we do not judge people for wanting to cope by minimizing that oppression.

We are sharing all the information about Weight loss injectables at our events this month because it is paramount folks stay informed, and know everything about the drugs— how they work, the side effects and harms involved.

Note: With this topic do not wish to question people’s body autonomy. We wish to move the conversation forwards and offer a non-stigmatizing approach to the discussion, focusing on the people causing harm *not* the people trying to manage the stigma.

🟢 Critical Take: How Weight Loss is Discussed in Running Media & Why It’s Problematic 🟢

Not nearly enough media sources in the Running community are talking about weight loss injectables (like Ozempic) and when they do, they frame the conversation using a weight normative lens,

👉🏾keep swiping to see why that’s not just misleading, but harmful ‼️🚫

🔍 The Problem with the Weight-Centric Lens:
Articles and conversations about these injectables tend to center on body weight as a primary factor in health and running performance. But this weight-centric lens overlooks a fundamental truth: health and athletic success aren’t determined by weight or size.

ALSO ➡️If you’ve been following us for a while you’ll know that the pathologization of body sizes, the BMI and weight stigma, are all rooted in and inextricable from racism and anti-blackness 😒

Other concerns a weight-centric lens could potentially raise includes —perpetuating disordered eating behaviors and/or eating disorders (that many runners are already vulnerable to 🛑🍽)

💡 How’s that? Well... these medications work by suppressing appetite, which can lead to restrictive eating patterns. We know that the Running World already has a high prevalence of eating disorders like anorexia, bulimia, and RED-S (Relative Energy Deficiency in Sport), where inadequate nutrition leads to serious health issues—hormonal imbalances, bone loss, and chronic fatigue.

[Note: That’s why coverage is *SO* problematic]
