Canada’s Aug. 6 travel advisory urges travellers to the United Arab Emirates, including Dubai, to “exercise a high degree of caution” due to ongoing regional tensions and terrorism threats. The government warns the security situation could change suddenly, leading to flight cancellations and airspace closures.
Authorities say terrorist groups have indicated possible attacks on Jewish and Israeli sites, airports, transportation hubs, malls, restaurants, and tourist areas. The risk of missile and drone strikes tied to Middle East conflicts is also noted. Canadians are advised to follow local authority instructions, stay informed through credible news, and register with the Registration of Canadians Abroad service for emergency updates.

Air Canada overhauls Aeroplan: points to be earned by dollars spent
Starting Jan. 1, 2026, Aeroplan members will earn points based on money spent on eligible Air Canada flights, not distance flown. For example, a $427 base fare earns 427 points (taxes/fees excluded). The program will also introduce Status Qualifying Credits (SQC), letting members fast-track to Elite status through flights, Aeroplan credit card use, and partner activity — with perks unlocked at every 10,000 SQC. Bonus point offers will be more frequent, and premium cardholders will get a 10% SQC boost starting 2027.

Canada’s job market stumbled in July, shedding 41,000 positions — mostly in the private sector and among young workers. Despite the losses, the national unemployment rate held steady at 6.9%, with the number of job seekers remaining flat. Youth employment was hit hardest, with 15–24-year-olds losing 34,000 jobs and seeing their employment rate drop to its lowest level since 1998 (excluding the pandemic). The biggest sectoral losses came from information, culture, and recreation, as well as construction. On the upside, transportation and warehousing added 26,000 jobs — the sector’s first gain in six months — while manufacturing continued a modest recovery. Still, nearly one in four unemployed Canadians are now considered long-term jobless, a number not seen in decades. Wages rose 3.3% year-over-year, but for many, the job search is getting tougher, not easier.

the Hudson’s Bay brand is about to get a new life — under Canadian Tire. After scooping up the iconic retailer’s intellectual property for $30 million earlier this year, Canadian Tire says it will start rolling out “fun initiatives” tied to the brand later this year, with a bigger relaunch set for 2026. That includes everything from the iconic Bay stripes and “Bay Days” slogan to its housewares and apparel lines. While the full plan is still under wraps, CEO Greg Hicks says the response from Canadians has been “overwhelmingly positive” and the company is taking its role as brand steward seriously. The acquisition comes as Canadian Tire restructures for growth with its $2B “True North” transformation program. Despite a dip in profit, the company saw a revenue bump this quarter — and it’s betting big on nostalgia, national pride, and strategic reinvention to carry that momentum forward.

The northern lights could make a rare appearance across much of Canada this week — and no, you won’t need to head to the Arctic to see them. A coronal mass ejection (CME) from the sun is expected to spark a geomagnetic storm by Friday night, pushing the aurora borealis into parts of the country that don’t normally get the show. According to NOAA forecasts, the best viewing chances are in the Prairies, B.C.'s Interior, northern Ontario, Quebec, and Labrador — but even southern regions may catch a glimpse if skies stay clear. The storm is forecast to hit a 6 out of 9 on the geomagnetic activity index, classified as “moderate” to “active,” and could cause minor tech disruptions to GPS and power systems. By Saturday, the light show will likely fade as the storm weakens. If you’ve never seen the aurora, this weekend might be your best shot without leaving home.

Doug Ford says Trump is ‘most disliked politician’ among Canadians amid trade war tensions
Premier Doug Ford criticized U.S. President Donald Trump during a CNN interview, calling him “probably the most disliked politician in the world in Canada” due to recent tariffs and strained cross-border relations. Ford also warned Trump may push to reopen CUSMA before its 2026 review, and urged Canada to respond with dollar-for-dollar tariffs.

Doug Ford wants to dig under the 401 — literally. The Ontario government is exploring a massive tunnel project that would run beneath Highway 401, connecting Brampton and Mississauga to Markham and Scarborough. The goal? Cut down on gridlock that currently traps GTA commuters for an average of 98 hours a year. The tunnel would carry both drivers and transit, and Ford says it won’t be tolled. A feasibility study is underway to assess the cost, geology, and global examples before shovels hit the ground. The province warns that without big infrastructure moves like this, travel times on the 401 could nearly double by 2051, and all 400-series highways in the GTHA could hit capacity in the next decade. With $11 billion in productivity already lost annually to congestion, the pressure is on — but whether this tunnel actually happens remains to be seen.
