Just two days left to make your voice heard about the value and importance of Special Measures for Journalism! Link below!

In 2020 the federal government introduced the Special Measures for Journalism fund as a timely and responsive policy tool to address the urgent challenges facing the industry.

Special Measures for Journalism (SMJ) funding has now ended.

Magazines Canada and the Canadian Magazine Coalition have been advocating for the continuation of this program as a permanent part of the Canada Periodical Fund. The government needs to hear from SMJ recipients directly. To facilitate your involvement, please review and sign your name to the letter at the link below and comment on the positive impacts SMJ has had on your business, and the potential repercussions of losing this funding (staffing, content, distro, etc.) Deadline to add your voice August 8.

A strong show of support from our members in our communications with the Government of Canada is critical. We need a united voice from coast to coast to coast.

It's the Magazines Canada Symposium, our first in-person (and hybrid) conference since pre-pandemic! A lot has changed since then, but what remains is the enormous value of magazine media people getting together, sharing great ideas, and helping each other with the challenges of our ever-evolving industry.

What a great afternoon we have lined up! After an exclusive members-only lunch, we'll dive into three fascinating panel discussions on urgent topics as chosen by members in our most recent engagement survey (details below). If you can't make it in person, all panels will be streamed at this fully hybrid event—and recorded on our members-only website.

And then a cocktail hour to relax, connect, and discuss what we've heard. All in the beautiful surroundings of the Islington Golf and Country Club.
All of this is included with your membership at no additional costs—tickets for staff at member publications, individual, professional development, or student/instructor members in good standing are all at no cost!

But what if you aren't a member? NO WORRIES! You can still attend the panels/cocktail hour and join the conversation—non-member tickets are $150 (only $25 for students with valid ID from a journalism, publishing, or writing program). Even better? If you attend the Symposium and realize later that a Magazines Canada membership is right for you/your organization—your ticket cost can be deducted from the cost of a new membership. How amazing is that?

Find out the full (outstanding!) line-up, location details, and GET REGISTERED at the link below. Don't wait—this is going to be an event you won't want to miss!

07/10/2025

Hey Magazines Canada Members in Ontario! The Government of Ontario has proposed a number of changes to the Resource Recovery and Circular Economy Act (RRCEA), 2016, and Magazines Canada is lobbying on this important topic. Over the next two weeks, there is an opportunity for members like you to add your voice to the public consultation process to make sure that magazines have a seat at the table now and going forward.

The RRCEA is Ontario’s framework for reducing waste and increasing the reuse and recycling of products and packaging through producer responsibility. Under this law, producers—including many magazine publishers—are required to cover the full cost of recycling the printed paper and packaging materials they supply into the market, which has imposed new financial and administrative burdens on magazine publishers. The Government of Ontario is proposing changes that would improve data collection and system oversight, improve transparency for producers like you by requiring Producer Responsibility Organizations to disclose more detailing and operational data for easier comparison, and is separately delaying the enforcement of mandatory recovery targets by five years (from 2026 to 2031).

Magazines Canada is supporting these changes and also asking for targeted financial relief for magazine publishers by extending the newspaper exemption, advocating for opportunities for public education partnerships through agreements with magazine publishers, and calling for a small publisher impact study to ensure cultural media producers are brought into long-term conversations about the impacts of legislation and patchwork legislation across the country.

Now through July 21, members of the public can submit comments on the proposed RRCRA changes directly on the Environmental Registry of Ontario at the link below. This is your opportunity to get your concerns about Ontario’s End Producer Responsibility (EPR) program on the record, including:
—How have EPR costs and administrative requirements impacted your business and ability to serve the Ontario market?
—Do you feel that magazine publishers’ concerns are being adequately considered in legislation?
—Do you believe that magazines should be treated like packaging or, like newspapers, given an exemption?
—Note: Do not include any identifying information, like names, addresses or phone numbers in your comments.

Have your say today...or before July 21!!
