Did you know that not all people of colour think the same way about issues of race? We don't. It always takes me by surprise as someone who grew up in B.C. without a lot of people of colour around me.
I grew up during a time of protest and activism of the civil rights movement in the U.S. We had to picket in grade 5 so that we could wear pants to school.
I always thought it was pretty clear that we all want to end racism, but some people don't believe that's possible. I don't think I could keep breathing if I didn't believe it with all my heart.
Tribalism is part of who we are without question. But caste and colourism are things we have created a value system around. From where I stand what we have created, we can re-create.
The power of content is that it can impact the future. And we must undertake to do that consciously - with every script, in every scene - in every phase of the process - in every department.
For years I have been working to create a platform that will help the industry do its part in making the world a better place. Hiring a diverse team is just the beginning. It's about being inclusive in a way that makes a difference.
I promise the first phase will be ready before the end of month. But before that I need to know what are the challenges you face during the launch phase especially as it pertains to working with diverse talent or themes.
