“Newly wed and nearly dead.” This is the adage by which Victoria has long been known — a quaint, if sleepy, coastal town, where young couples settle down to raise their families alongside retirees seeking a quieter life outside the big city. So, when we visited Design Victoria earlier this month, the unmistakable energy in the air took us by pleasant surprise. As far as design scenes go, the BC capital is hardly on the global radar when compared with established epicentres like Milan and New York. But there is something exciting about exploring a city that is, in many ways, still becoming — and meeting the players who are shaping it in real time.

In Victoria, questions of housing, public access and reconciliation aren’t abstract planning debates; they’re actively shaping the built environment, from a church redevelopment by MA+HG Architects and Aryze Developments that treats heritage as cultural infrastructure to public installations that surface erased ecological histories.

The results are in! It is our immense pleasure to introduce and applaud the AZ Awards 2026 winners, all 28 of them from around the globe, whom we officially celebrated at the AZ Awards Gala last night! Collectively, the winners represent the state of architecture and design — and it’s encouraging and inspiring to honour these projects, products and concepts that exemplify not only aesthetic prowess but also a commitment to social and environmental responsibility.

In addition to the winners chosen by our international jury, we also raise a glass to our People’s Choice honourees, selected by an online vote. In some cases, the people agreed with our official panel — in most others, as we are always delighted to see, their opinions and allegiances diverged dramatically. We are proud to present them all here, and also to celebrate them again in our Summer 2026 edition of Azure, out soon! In that issue, we also fête our Emerging awards winners, which have their own dedicated announcement.

Studio PROTOTYPE reimagines the justice workplace as a permeable, light-driven environment, using a sequence of internal courtyards to dissolve boundaries between public and private realms. This approach not only maximizes daylight but also subtly reframes the relationship between transparency, security, and civic trust within the judicial context.

In the 1991 French film Les Amants du Pont-Neuf (“The Lovers on the Bridge”), a couple dances over the Seine in front of a spectacular fireworks display. This January, the DesignTO group show “Pot-au-Feu” adopted this scene as its opening credits. The footage played on loop inside the subterranean gallery the plumb , projected onto a white sheet, with the names of the show’s nearly two dozen Québécois contributors superimposed on top. Throughout the rest of the gallery, each of these cast members added their own creative spark to a downright explosive showcase of furniture, decor and art that formed a welcome bridge from Toronto to la belle province.
