It's time to soak up the sun! 🌞🐢🌴
We're officially in summer holidays mode here, and we've kicked things off with this sun-tanning turtle snack. It is such an easy one to make, so save this post for easy reference and then keep reading!
To make the turtle, all you'll need is one green apple. Cut it in half, and then choose the best-looking half to be your shell. I scored mine diagonally both ways to give the shell some texture, but that step is optional. Using the other half, cut two thin slices off the whole apple. Using a paring knife, cut around both sides of the core on your first thin slice and you'll be left with two crescent shapes that become two legs. Do the same with your second slice for the other two legs, then tuck all four under the body on your plate. Cut a third thin slice from the leftover apple and cut a round head. I used a small round cutter shape, but it wouldn't be too hard to make it freehand.
To make the palm tree, all you'll need is a cheestring and a kiwi. The cheestring is the trunk, and then you'll arrange your kiwi chunks to become the palm fronds. Use as many as you like (I used half a kiwi cut lengthwise into six wedges). Top tip when working with kiwi... pat it with a paper towel after you cut it. It takes away some of the shine (to make it easier to snap a good picture of) and also makes it less slippery to work with.
To make the sun, we used a regular Babybel cheese. We only had one left, so we cut it lengthwise to give us two circles. One we set down as-is, and then from the second circle we cut the rays. You can leave your sun white (or use cheddar cheese), but we used Wiltons food writers (edible markers) to color ours a nice, bright yellow. You can often find these at Walmart, Michael's craft stores, or online through Amazon.
Well, what do you think, folks? Would this plate be a winner with your kids this summer? If so, dont forget to hit the ❤️ on your way by!
