Today is our 3 year anniversary, and our last day operating at The Issue Magazine.

It’s been 3 years since the magazine first began in 2020 as a one woman team, evolving through the years to a 2 person team, before bringing on over 20 volunteers from across the country. Though separated by province (and timezone), the members of this magazine— the ‘Issue-nity’—were united by one common goal to bring the love of fashion back to our communities in Canada. We set out to reaffirm fashion as a viable career path in smaller hubs like Edmonton, and share knowledge from small business owners and industry leaders living out a life in the Canadian fashion industry.

We’ve interviewed with inspired designers and actors, shot photoshoots with incredible talent and photographers, and have been part of some of the most inventive fashion shows in Edmonton. We’re so honoured to have shared Alberta’s glowing fashion scene with the rest of Canada (and vise-versa), and now, this chapter for The Issue Magazine is coming to an end.

From the bottom of our hearts, thank YOU for these incredible past 3 years, and thank you for being a part of this Issue-nity.

It's not goodbye, it's 🎶 ✨'Don't You Forget About Me.' ✨🎶

With love always,
Donnalee Riley, Editor-in-Chief + Creative Director
The Issue-nity 🤍

For our final post in the series on places to study fashion and textiles in Canada, we're highligting the University of Alberta and their Human Ecology Program.

The Human Ecology Department is home to one of the biggest clothing and textile collections in Canada, the Anne Lambert Clothing and Textile Collection. In our latest article, we look into the history of this collection, it's value to the community, and the opportunites it provides to both students and the public to physically interact with history through fashion.

Our May Issue is here! We also have an important announcement: 🚨

As you might have guessed by this month’s theme, this issue is a ‘Curtain Call’ for The Issue Magazine, and our official announcement that we’ll be closing our doors permanently on June 3rd, 2023, our 3-year anniversary.

We can not begin to describe the unexplainable joy we’ve encountered on this journey, in every article we’ve shared, every brand we’ve worked with, every photoshoot we’ve rolled up to and every event we’ve shown out for. This was only made possible by you, our community who welcomed and supported us with open arms. While this is a bittersweet moment as our Issue-nity splits ways, we’ll always be connected by the beautiful thing we’ve created here.

You haven't heard the last of us just yet! We'll be around for the remainder of the week, officially closing our doors on Saturday, June 3rd, 2023.

Thank you for all your love and support over the last 3 years, and we hope you enjoy our final monthly issue - you can read on our website or at the link in our bio.

The “Beat” movement of the 1950s-60s was a social movement where people rejected mainstream American culture and supported anti-materialistic lifestyles.

The beatnik style is timeless, with pieces like berets, black turtlenecks, and loafers. Our latest article breaks down the history of this fascinating fashion movement.

For years, we’ve seen the fashion industry depicted in films. While gruelling hours and monster bosses are comedic on screen, they do reflect some of the realities of an otherwise romanticized industry.

In our recent article, we dive into the way that a job in fashion can impact your mental health — and how to maintain a healthy outlook, while still enjoying your career.

It's hard to combat the stereotypes of the fashion industry that we see in the media almost every day. Movies like The Devil Wears Prada and How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days show us the harshness that can come with the job working in this industry. Some of these scenarios can sometimes turn out to be true and it's important to have your dream but to make sure you're mentally and physically healthy too.
