The news is out! You're going to see my face at The Sewing Cafe a lot more. We have some exciting changes happening in store for both Quilters and Garment Makers. Stay tuned for more information.

Dear Sewing Cafe Community,

I am excited to announce a new chapter at The Sewing Cafe. Embracing our theme of "Pivoting with the Needle Down," changes will be coming to our management team to better serve our vibrant and growing community of crafters and creators.

You are going to see a new face or two joining The Sewing Cafe. I have been the heart and soul of the Sewing Basics and garment-making classes. I will be continuing to inspire and guide you through your sewing adventures with the same passion and expertise you've come to love.
Tammy Christiansen will be taking over the ownership, on June 18, 2024. Tammy brings a wealth of business knowledge having owned several, very successful businesses. She is an experienced quilter, having bought her longarm machine from us a number of years ago. She sews garments for herself and is the creator of the Copenhagen Quilted Coat, you may have seen in the shop. And her daughter attended multiple classes here a few ago. I am very excited to have Tammy take over the shop so I can focus on teaching.

Catherine is excited to continue her journey as our quilting instructor. And she has been helping Tammy order lots of new fabrics. Pat and Linda C. will also still be around, helping customers, sharing their expertise.

We're going to be moving things around in late June. The shop will remain open during our regular business hours. You'll see an additional classroom space and expanded hours. We're super excited for this one...a wide format printer! It can print copy shop (A0) pattern files for our garment makers starting in July. Plus, a lot more.

Please shop our renovation sale! Just about everything in store is on sale. We're hoping to have less to move as we switch things around.

Thank you for your continued support as we sew new threads into our story. Stay tuned for more updates and exciting events at the Sewing Cafe!

We're excited to announce that due to popular demand, we have extended "The Secret Codes: African Nova Scotian Quilts" until August 18, 2024.

Curated by David Woods, the exhibition brings together historic and contemporary quilts from makers connected to Nova Scotia, embodying the stories and voices of the community. Included are more than 35 quilts and a selection of paintings that highlight the various functions of quilts over time: as decorated blankets in the home, as possible codes of communication for enslaved people seeking freedom, as records of family history, as a celebration of Black women and culture, and as inspiration for other art forms.

Thank you to everyone who has visited to experience this exhibition so far. Your support has been overwhelming and we can't wait to continue to share this exhibition with visitors through the summer!

I've been meaning to get a video done for ages! So if that was you, here you go! https://youtu.be/Im_hRmyxC4E

And I've included some photos of the completed coat. If you want to see it in person, it's hanging on a mannequin at The Sewing Cafe for a little bit. Until I need it for the next quilt show that is. Which quilt shows coming up should I go to?

I had so much fun quilting this quilt for Urooj. And it is the second one she has done with this panel. This baby quilt is so cuddly with the puffy batting and super soft backing.

It looks custom, and I guess in a way it is. But it was mostly computerized. I used designs found in ProStitcher for the borders, traced the panel for the main design, and then filled the open background with a cloud and hot air balloon edge to edge I digitized.
