📣 The Orange Notebooks is here! 📣

Happy North American pub day to Susanna Crossman and this absolutely gorgeous novel.

recommends The Orange Notebooks over at , including a nod to the book’s recipes(!) and a nice long excerpt, while has written a stellar review that gets straight at the book’s heart:

“The Orange Notebooks inhabits grief, lingering in this emotion without rushing to resolution, asking readers to abandon expectations of narrative comfort. This is not a book about ‘getting better’ in any conventional sense, but about finding ways to live with permanent alteration. Crossman has created a work that honors both the brutality of loss and the persistence of love.”

First 👀 at Goose by Melanie Dennis Unrau, set to hit shelves Oct 7:

Tracing words the way a tracker moves across land, Goose collects hand-copied details from Northland Trails, a book of self-illustrated short stories, poems, and essays about the Athabasca region authored by “father of the tar sands” S. C. Ells. At turns cheeky, sharp-witted, and grave, Melanie Dennis Unrau’s poems explore extraction and the relationship between humans, non-humans, and the land, resulting in an act of irreverent, deconstructive literary criticism.

👀 Coming soon: The Orange Notebooks by Susanna Crossman is out Sept 2!

Told through a mother’s journals written while interned in a French psychiatric ward, this is a novel about love, and the lost language and rituals of mourning.
The siesta hour, France. Bees fly in lavender bushes. Anna has just come home, but something is wrong, and she fears nothing will ever be right again.

Anna is haunted by the death of her only child, Lou. Hospitalized in a psychiatric ward, Anna becomes determined to undo death by writing everything down in a set of orange notebooks: fragments and tales about bees, death rituals, the story of her relationship with Lou’s Basque father, Antton, and their meeting on a ferry on the day Princess Diana died, a cursed trench coat, Lou’s Jewish and Basque heritage, and the duplicity of the colour beige.

In the hospital, Anna meets Yann, a Breton sea captain. Together, they go on a surreal, Orphic journey to the underworld, sailing from Finistère to the middle of the English Channel, to try and find Lou at the exact point where his destiny began.

It’s Paperback Book Day! 📚

There’s a few reasons Assembly only publishes books as paperbacks:

1️⃣ Paperbacks are better for the environment than hardback books. Manufacturing a hardcover typically takes twice the resources as a softcover paperback book.

2️⃣ Paperbacks take up less space, typically weigh less, and are more portable (and use less emissions when being shipped!), which makes them perfect for vacation reading.

3️⃣Paperbacks are cheaper to produce and therefore cheaper for readers and libraries to purchase — so you can enjoy more of them!

“In County Social: Vignettes from Prince Edward County’s Craft Drinkmakers, Natalie Wollenberg and Leigh Nash invite readers into the dynamic, delicious world of PEC’s booming craft‑drink scene. The book is both a visual feast and a heartfelt tribute to the people behind the bottles—wineries, breweries, cideries, and distilleries alike.”

Read the full review over at Canadian Cookbooks, along with a recipe excerpt for the Drake Devonshire’s Burrata, Heirloom Tomato, and Peach Salad with Sourdough Toast (a perfect summer meal, if we do say so ourselves).

Here’s the recipe intro note from Executive Chef Amanda Ray: “This summer-ripened recipe comes together with access to so many great County tomato growers, accented with amazing local burrata cheese and some outstanding sourdough from bakery friends. Seasonally inspired, other versions have included a fresh salsa verde with crispy kale, torched snow peas, pickled kohlrabi, and puffed sorghum for spring. Walking the fields with farmers who are continuously passionate is an invigorating part of the County’s culinary community. The unique and unexpected pairing of peaches and truffles, which I showcase here, comes from my adventures in France.”

Link to review and recipe is in our bio, and don’t forget to pick up a copy of County Social for more interviews, recipes, and photos!
