“The hand-traced, layered poems in Melanie Dennis Unrau’s latest collection, Goose, stalk and dance across the page. The poems use Sidney Clarke Ells’ collection of poetry, Northland Trails, as well as his memoirs as source texts, in addition to archival accounts by Indigenous and Métis inhabitants of the North. These poems are an angry, funny, generous intervention into the national mythology.”

Thanks to melanie brannagan frederiksen and the Winnipeg Free Press for this stellar review of Goose, available now from a library or bookstore near you!

📣 Three cheers for Gary Barwin and Scandal at the Alphorn Factory, which is longlisted for the Hamilton Literary Award in Fiction! 📣

Scandal at the Alphorn Factory: New and Selected Short Fiction, 2024–1984 couples brand new and uncollected stories with selections of the most playful and ambitious of Barwin’s previous collections, including Cruelty to Fabulous Animals, Big Red Baby, Doctor Weep and Other Strange Teeth, and I, Dr. Greenblatt, Orthodontist, 251–1457. Known as a “whiz-bang storyteller” who can deliver magical, dream-like sequences and truisms about the human condition in the same paragraph, Barwin’s trademark brilliance, wit, and originality are on display in this can’t-miss collection of short fiction.

Nothing like a Monday morning hard launch: Assembly Press and Brick Books are delighted to share the news that we are merging operations.

“This merger is the best path forward for both presses to continue to be innovative, independent and flexible while retaining our individual identities, and it will absolutely allow us to operate more competitively in the trade market. Assembly Press shares the same values as Brick Books, and we both believe in the future of Canadian poetry, and in a strong independent Canadian publishing sector.”—Leigh Nash, Publisher, Assembly Press

“I have watched the growth of Assembly Press with admiration. Their operations are smart, author-centred, and grounded in ethics and authenticity. I can’t imagine a better partner as we navigate this challenging market.” —Alayna Munce, Publisher, Brick Books

Stay tuned for updates as we continue to navigate this new path together.

“Susanna Crossman reimagines turning and looking back here, in a kind of experiment in genre. The Orange Notebooks is an adventure story, to be sure, but it is also part aching memoir, part lyrical poetry, part polychromatic kaleidoscope, part surreptitious ‘found footage’ but, most thoroughly, part primordial myth.”

Big thanks to for bringing attention to ’s novel 🧡

The Orange Notebooks is in stores now across North America ✨order from your favourite indie or request it from your local library branch!

📣 Three cheers for and Inherent!

Inherent is longlisted for the 2025 Nelson Ball Prize, which is awarded annually to a Canadian poet for a published work that features “poetry of observation.”

Inherent is a collection of Letraset concrete poems that uses poetic tools to reduce words and letters and characters to their structural components, celebrating the shapes we’re used to taking for granted.

📣 Goose is here! 📣

Happy publication day to Melanie Dennis Unrau and this genre-defying collection of writing and images.

Poet Dani Spinosa sums it up best: “Honk if you’re ready to ruffle the colonial archive! Goose is one of those rare and wonderful works that just sits beautifully, irreverently, and wholly in its hybridity, its experimentation, and its genre-bending and never once tries to justify itself. In this sharp, witty, funny, and deeply political collection, Melanie Dennis Unrau raises a delicately inked middle finger to extractivist nostalgia. Tracing and transforming the settler boosterism of Sidney Clarke Ells, she reclaims the page with each gestural mark and cheeky erasure. The result is, like every goose, fierce, silly, and totally ungovernable.”
