The latest episode of Bree Gamble's story is out. She has been gone for almost 5 years now, but those who loved Bree are stuck in the spring of 2021 when she was murdered. It's not too late to find justice for Bree and her family. Hoping the podcast puts her case back on the front burner. 🙏

Another win for FGG (or IGG) forensic genetic genealogy. 🙏

SOLVED! It's another win for Ontario Provincial Police. Thanks to the magic of forensic genetic genealogy, Jason Timothy Davidson, 52 of Campbell River, BC has been arrested and charged with four violent sexual assaults that happened in southwestern Ontario in 1997. Three of the female victims were teenagers at the time of the assaults. Sexual assault is the most underreported crime in Canada, with only 6% of victims reporting the assault to police. And if you saw how the victim of the Ontario hockey players sexual assault was treated at the trial this year, it's not hard to see why. It’s the late 80s. I’ve just been asked out on a date — by a young guy named Jim. I’ve had a crush on him for ages. He invites me to a movie at a rep cinema, and I’m stunned. He’s never shown the slightest interest in me. I’m a public policy nerd with average looks — hardly his type. But I’m curious, and honestly flattered. So I say yes.

The movie is 'Laura' — the classic film noir that inspired the term “The Laura Syndrome.” A warning to investigators: don’t fall in love with the ideal of a victim. Keep your distance. Don’t get too close.

I never have another date with Jim. But without him, I probably never would’ve seen Laura — or learned about The Laura Syndrome. Clearly, I missed the message. I can’t help but become consumed by every case I cover on Island Crime. It’s been more than thirty years since that night in the darkened theatre. Maybe it’s time I watched Laura again.
