🚗 Nearly 3,000 Parking Tickets in 2 Months — Westboro & Wellington West

A CTV Ottawa report says bylaw officers have issued 2,966 parking tickets since the city introduced paid on-street parking in Westboro, Wellington West, and Hintonburg just two months ago.

About 700 paid parking spots were added along Richmond Road and Wellington Street West on Sept 2, with rates set at $3/hour.

City officials say the goal is to improve turnover and make parking more available for shoppers and visitors in high-demand areas.

🅿️ Paid parking is now in effect:
• Churchill Ave (N to S from Richmond Rd to Scott St)
• Richmond Rd (West & East sections)
• Wellington Village and Hintonburg side streets

Motorists are reminded to check signage before parking — enforcement began after a short warning period in early September.

The city says these changes were designed to support local businesses by ensuring more parking turnover during peak hours.

📊 A recent YouGov study found that 34% of adults believe in ghosts, and roughly 10% claim to have witnessed one firsthand.

Researchers suggest these experiences may stem from how the brain interprets uncertainty, emotion, and sensory input — especially in low light or moments of stress.
Others argue it points to a reality we don’t fully understand.

Whether you’re a skeptic or a believer, the data reminds us: the unexplained still holds power.

Do you believe in ghosts? 👻

📊 CTV News Ottawa reports that total criminal offences in Ottawa have climbed 63% between 2015 and 2024, with over 50,600 reported offences last year.

• Violent crime: up 58%
• Property crime: up 64%
• Shoplifting: up an alarming 384%, reaching 12,100 incidents
• Mischief: the only category down, by 13%

Police Chief Eric Stubbs noted that retail theft spans from organized crime to people struggling to afford essentials. He said part of the increase may reflect better reporting and urged businesses to continue reporting thefts so police can identify repeat offenders.

Stubbs also highlighted the “crime prevention through environmental design” program — a free service where officers help local businesses redesign layouts to reduce theft risk.

Meanwhile, the service faces rising strain: overtime up 226%, sick leave up 34%, and a clearance rate down to 26% (from 36% in 2015). As the city heads into budget talks, a 6.5% police levy increase is on the table to meet rising demands.
