I was out helping another farmer this morning. Simple call sequence. Lone howl to get their attention, wait 10 minutes, subtle rabbit distress to get them in the field, then mouse distress to seal the deal.

I’ve been watching this bear for 6 weeks as he worked the barrel almost every night after shooting light until 3 days ago when he seemed to change his pattern and started coming 15 minutes on the legal light clock. Last evening I decided to walk in thru heavy bush to the stand completely avoiding the main trail. Just when I was thinking I wasn’t going to see him I heard a branch break on the main trail and there he was cautiously talking into the barrel, but not before he sat down 10 feet from my stand ladder to watch , listen and smell the air for 10 minutes. I got an arrow thru him with 5 minutes to spare.

Walter is showing up more often now which has been his MO for the past 5 year , however this year he seems to be following the same path thru the farm. Something he has never done. As we all know these big boys are very unpredictable but the cameras are watching him and the stands are set.

I’ve always been a lead core troller for lake trout however the past couple years and a better sonar system has had me jigging for them with great success. No monsters today but nephew and I had a blast hunting for them and dropping lures literally on their heads.

I’ve never attached a name to any animals I’ve hunted over the years because to be honest I’ve always thought it was a bit silly however I’ve changed my mind for this deer. After chasing him for 5 seasons now he deserves a title. For those of you who have seen the movie “On Golden Pond” you will understand why I’ve decided to name him “Walter”. And so the chase begins again 👍😁

I’m getting call almost every day now to help with the coyote problem in our area. My go to sequence during the summer is simple. Half volume rabbit distress first. Wait 10 minutes, then a single male invitation howl , wait another 10 minutes and finally loud rabbit distress . I got this male at a sheep farm just before last light using the described sequence

Bears were hit and miss thru the whole spring season this year. I sat a few evenings watching smaller ones hoping for a last light surprises but the big boys never showed up. I’ll be back at it in September. Time to do a little trout fishing and set cameras on deer trails for the summer.
