Time to Rethink the Name Harambee Stars

I have always admired our national football team, but there is one issue that has troubled me for years. The name Harambee Stars.

Many people may not know that Harambee is not originally a Swahili word. Its roots are traced back to Indian laborers who worked on the railway in Kenya more than a century ago. They used the chant “Hare Ambe” (a call to a Hindu goddess) when pulling heavy loads. Over time, the chant was adopted locally and evolved into Harambee.

In Kenya, the word later took on a different meaning. President Jomo Kenyatta gave it new life as a national motto for unity and self-help, encouraging communities to pool resources for development projects. Since then, Harambee has been celebrated as a call to work together for the common good.

Yet here is the question: Should our national team carry a name with origins that may not reflect who we truly are as a people? Each time we cheer “Harambee Stars,” do we really understand the deeper roots of the word? Or should we consider a name that is more authentically African, one that speaks to our identity, faith, and destiny as a nation?

This is not about disrespecting history or culture, but about reflection. Kenya is a land rich in heritage, languages, and values. Perhaps the time has come to have an honest conversation about whether Harambee Stars truly represents us, or whether a new name rooted in our African spirit would better carry the pride of our football and the hope of our people.

Change may not happen overnight, but conversations like this are where it begins.

What Is Kelvin Chabogo Foundation Doing In Kenya?

By God’s grace, we have launched a Pastors’ Kids Mentorship Program to provide counseling, guidance, and spiritual direction for the children of pastors.

Across Kenya and Africa at large, pastors’ children have often been overlooked. While church members receive care and spiritual formation, pastors’ kids are frequently left on their own. Sadly, this neglect has contributed to many of them becoming rebellious and disconnected from the very faith their parents serve. As a Foundation, we asked ourselves: What can we do to help?

In one of our leadership meetings last year, this idea was born. After months of prayer and planning, we are excited to announce that the program officially began this month.

We currently have 30 pastors’ kids enrolled, and they will be mentored for four months, meeting once every month. Each session is designed to encourage, counsel, and equip them to grow in faith, character, and leadership.

We are grateful for Pastor Jackson Kaluwa, who has taken leadership of this initiative. He has worked tirelessly, engaging pastors and encouraging them to allow their children 20 years and older to join the program. His dedication has been instrumental in getting this project off the ground.

This mentorship program is just the beginning, We believe that through consistent guidance, these young men and women will rise to be strong, responsible, and Christ-centered leaders in the future

Let's accept it, there are no people who love to give to churches like Kenyans and Africans at large. But what do rogue pastors do? They rip off their church members beyond repair! Of course, not all churches do this, but the majority are so used to exploiting church members that folks actually believe:

"God cannot bless you if you do not bring Him anything!"

This crazy belief came from witches. If you have ever been to a native doctor (or what they call in Swahili "Mganga"), you know you cannot go there empty-handed. You must carry a chicken, a goat, or money and sometimes both.

This reminds me of back in the day when I was not a believer in Christ, and we would visit the Mganga, desperately desiring to change our lives. What did we get? Well, the Mganga always demanded a chicken, and he would eat the cooked chicken with his family as we watched. Of course, he had deceived us that only through him eating the chicken would our problems disappear. But was this true? No! We suffered even more; We moved from house to house for lack of rent, and moved from school to school for lack of fees. In my primary school years alone, I attended over 9 schools because we simply could not afford staying in a single place!

Now, if a person comes to the Lord and to the church with all these issues and is promised they will receive blessings if they give, would they not act? Sure they will! As long as they are promised material blessings, they would give!

And nothing makes people want to give to a pastor like a pastor who is on TV! Being on TV makes people believe you are the best, only for these vulnerable folks to get swindled. That's why in Africa, we must educate our church members to give responsibly and not squander their livelihood on men of the cloth who come with promises of prosperity after sowing that seed!

By God’s grace, we have secured a Four-Month Discipleship Program where we will minister to and disciple juvenile inmates at Shimo La Tewa Prison in Mombasa County.

Can you imagine the impact this will have on these young lives? For four months, we will be walking with them, teaching them the Word of God, and helping them build a strong foundation of faith that will guide them even beyond prison walls.

We truly thank God for this opportunity to be a blessing to these precious kids and to sow seeds that will shape their future.

I. Job Summary

The Kelvin Chabogo Foundation seeks two passionate, faith-driven, and community-focused individuals to serve as Faith & Community Development Officers in Kwale and Kilifi. The role requires a strong theological foundation, discipleship experience, and a compassionate heart for ministry and service.

This position covers:

1. Widow empowerment

2. School missions

3. Prison missions

4. Other community development activities as assigned.

II. Key Responsibilities

A. Discipleship & Spiritual Development

1. Lead weekly discipleship sessions for widows, students, and community members.

2. Provide prayer, biblical counseling, and spiritual mentorship.

3. Facilitate Bible studies grounded in the teachings of Jesus Christ.

4. Promote spiritual maturity and community transformation through Christ-centred discipleship.

B. Community Engagement & Missions

1. Organize and lead School Missions to reach and disciple students.

2. Participate in Prison Missions, offering teaching, discipleship, and reintegration support for inmates.

3. Identify and register widows and orphans in need of support.

4. Verify eligibility through proper documentation (death certificates, burial photos, referrals).

5. Engage churches, schools, and local leaders for community buy-in.

6. Conduct home visits and monitor spiritual and social progress.

C. Financial Literacy & Empowerment

1. Train widows and vulnerable groups on budgeting, saving, and small business management.

2. Introduce sustainable livelihood projects such as farming or small enterprises.

3. Support the development of community-led income-generating initiatives.

D. Reporting & Coordination

1. Report to the Mtwapa office each morning before field deployment.

2. Submit weekly reports on discipleship activities, school and prison missions, and community progress.

3. Maintain consistent communication with the Program Director.

III. Mandatory Requirements:

1. Age between 25 and 35 years.

2. Diploma or Degree in Theology or Community Development from a recognized institution.

3. Completion of The Way and The Walk program (or willingness to complete it after hiring).

4. Experience in leading or facilitating discipleship programs.

5. Residence within Greater Mombasa Area (Kwale, Kilifi, or Mombasa counties).

6. Proficiency in MS Word, email, and reporting systems.

7. Compassionate, humble, and committed to service.

8. Valid Certificate of Good Conduct.

BIBLE STUDY WEDNESDAY

TOPIC: The Real Battlefield

The greatest spiritual warfare is not what many people think. It is not just about demonic attacks, car accidents, strange dreams, or emotional oppression. Those are real, yes, but they are not the greatest battles. The fiercest and most critical warfare is for the souls of men. That is where the true war rages.

Every time a soul turns to Jesus, hell suffers a massive loss. Satan's kingdom is shaken. You see, the devil, his fallen angels, and all demonic agents know their final destination is the lake of fire. They are fully aware that their time is short, so they work relentlessly to drag as many people as possible into eternal destruction.

But there is one thing that causes them irreversible damage: soul winning. When a believer shares the Gospel and someone responds in repentance and faith, the power of darkness is broken in that person's life. A prisoner is set free. A soul is transferred from the kingdom of darkness into the Kingdom of God's dear Son.

That is why evangelism is not optional. If we stay silent, Satan wins souls. But if we rise up, open our mouths, and proclaim Christ, we bring the fight directly to the gates of hell. This is what Jesus meant when He said in Matthew 11:12,

"The kingdom of heaven suffers violence, and the violent take it by force" (NKJV).

Now, let us pause a bit and try to understand what this verse really means. Notice, a clearer way to understand this would be to take a look at the verse from the original Greek language. The key Greek words reveal something powerful. Here is the original Greek. Do not worry if you do not understand it; you do not have to:

“ἀπὸ δὲ τῶν ἡμερῶν Ἰωάννου τοῦ βαπτιστοῦ ἕως ἄρτι ἡ βασιλεία τῶν οὐρανῶν βιάζεται, καὶ βιασταὶ ἁρπάζουσιν αὐτήν.”

Let me translate three important words by word here to help us understand what the writer is talking about:

1. βιάζεται (biazetai) means to force, to seize, or to press into with effort.

2. βιασταί (biastai) means those who are forceful, aggressive, or eager.

3. ἁρπάζουσιν (harpazousin) means to sn**ch, seize, or take by force.

The NIV translates Matthew 11:12 this way:

"From the days of John the Baptist until now, the kingdom of heaven has been forcefully advancing, and forceful men lay hold of it." (NIV)

Please Notice that, this verse is not really describing violent people attacking the Kingdom. Rather, it describes spiritually intentional people, those who are desperate, hungry, and bold pressing into the Kingdom of God and taking others with them. The "violent" here are not rebels or enemies. They are passionate soul winners. These are the ones who refuse to let souls perish without hearing the Gospel.

Thus, the meaning of the verse can be summarized as: "The Kingdom of God is advancing forcefully, and it is the intentional, the bold, and the spiritually aggressive who lay hold of it."

Being forceful means being intentional about souls. It means refusing to be passive while people around you go to hell. It means refusing to let fear, shame, or busyness silence your witness. It means opening your mouth for Christ. It means choosing to share Jesus with someone even when it is inconvenient, uncomfortable, or awkward.

It means seeing every conversation as a potential Gospel opportunity. It means carrying Gospel tracts. It means being ready to give an answer for the hope that is within you. It means praying for boldness and then acting on it.

Matthew 11:12 has nothing to do with earthly prosperity and has everything to do with advancing the Kingdom forcefully. Remember, the Kingdom of God does not advance through wishful thinking, church programs, or comfortable Christianity. It advances when believers rise with urgency and go after souls. This means that evangelism is not just part of the Christian life; it is how the Kingdom breaks into the enemy's territory.

Please understand this: Every time you share the Gospel, you are launching an assault on Satan's kingdom. You are rescuing prisoners from the enemy's camp. You are advancing God's Kingdom into dark places. You are fulfilling the Great Commission. You are participating in the greatest battle ever fought.

And make no mistake, the enemy resists it fiercely. This is why soul winning is spiritual warfare. It is not just a conversation. It is a confrontation with the powers of darkness. It is storming the gates of hell with the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

Listen and pay attention. The Kingdom is advancing, and it is the intentional, those who are spiritually awake and willing to act, who will lay hold of it. But here is my question for you:

Are you one of the violent ones? Are you forcefully advancing the Kingdom through evangelism? Are you intentionally seeking to win souls? Or are you sitting back, comfortable and silent, while souls slip into eternity without Christ?

If you claim to be born again and have no burden for soul winning, if you claim to be saved yet you do not care if people go to hell or not most probably, you too are on your way to hell. It is impossible to be touched by God and fail to have a burden for soul winning. It is impossible.

Our team walks with her physically to the market, emotionally in her struggles, and spiritually in her growth.

Beyond food and fellowship, we also equip her with basic budgeting skills and income-generating ideas so she can rebuild her life with hope and confidence.
