A white picket fence
without any strife
a job secure
a happy wife
financial strategies that worked
and no student loans
a dog that barked
a car that parked
and a horse that knew the way home
we looked for a heaven
much further down
then it was supposed to be found
but that didn't stop us
from trying to make it down here
some of us chased it in the future
and others in the past
some of us thought we finally found it
yet it never seemed to last
some of us would over work
running as the salve for pain
and others would hardly leave the house
to face the world again
another high
another drug
another kick
another love
tired
exhausted
dying
weary of trying
until You
and some of us hardly knew
how to believe anymore
but we could sprawl out at your feet
some of us hardly dared to hope
but you caught the flicker in our eyes
the look of a desperate cry
forming for mercy
You picked up the brokenness
like it wasn't the weight
we had been adjusting to carry
as easily as possible
over and over
for years
You looked at us like we weren't a mistake
like an artist looks at an empty canvas
in anticipation
and the parts that were ruined
you were willing to remake
and we never knew
that all the while we were searching for heaven
we were simply looking for You
