Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney extended an olive branch to the White House on Tuesday when he met the president just a week after anti-Trump sentiment propelled his party to victory. The widely anticipated meeting had its awkward moments, like when Carney declared that “Canada is not for sale,” and President Donald Trump replied, “Never say never.” But for the most part, the leaders of the neighboring countries tried to downplay tensions.

“The first substantive encounter between the newly elected Canadian leader and Trump … involved mostly gestures of friendship and pledges from both sides to reset the trade relationship,” writes POLITICO’s Eli Stokols. “But the public portion of their remarks did not reveal specifics of what shape a pact might take — and the impasse over Trump’s tariffs remained obvious.”

Trump held firm that Carney couldn’t convince him to lift tariffs on Canadian automobiles, steel and aluminum – levies that have sparked intense anger among Canadians toward the U.S. Carney, in response, told the president his current tariff regime on Canada was “taking advantage” of the current U.S.-Mexico-Canada trade pact Trump negotiated during his first term.

A ruling for St. Isidore of Seville Catholic Virtual School would allow taxpayer money to directly flow to a faith-based school for the first time and give government sponsorship to a curriculum that calls for students to adhere to Catholic beliefs and religious mission.

The Supreme Court heard arguments over whether taxpayer dollars may be used to directly fund a proposed Catholic charter school in Oklahoma. The case could redraw the line between church and state.

Today, Secretary of State Marco Rubio convened the Signing of a Declaration of Principles between the Government of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and the Government of the Republic of Rwanda. Foreign Minister Thérèse Kayikwamba Wagner signed on behalf of the Government of the DRC, while Foreign Minister Olivier Nduhungirehe signed on behalf of the Government of Rwanda. Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau, Senior Advisor for Africa Massad Boulos, and Ambassador Troy Fitrell also joined Secretary Rubio on this occasion. The Declaration builds on the efforts of the African Union and other regional leaders. It outlines a pathway to peace, stability, and integrated economic development in the eastern DRC region, which is vital to ending the conflict and allowing the region to reach its full potential. The United States will continue engaging with both nations to uphold the declaration’s principles and support the crucial work towards peace and prosperity.
