In 1978, Sony co-founder Masaru Ibuka wanted a portable way to listen to music—specifically opera—during his frequent flights. Sony’s engineers modified one of their existing cassette recorders, the TC-D5, by removing the recording function and adding lightweight headphones. This prototype became the foundation for what was launched in 1979 as the Sony Walkman.

The Walkman revolutionized personal audio by making music portable and private, fundamentally changing how people experienced music in everyday life.
