It is Day 3 of Phragmites Awareness Week! 🌾

Today we’re talking about one of the most important steps in tackling this invasive plant: learning how to identify invasive phragmites!

Invasive phragmites can form thick walls of vegetation, sometimes growing over five metres tall. The stems are stiff, hollow, and usually a tan or straw colour. Its long, flat leaves are a blue-green shade, and the plant produces large, fluffy seedheads — typically reddish-purple in summer and fading to a pale beige as the season changes.

It can look similar to Ontario’s native phragmites, but natives usually have looser, smaller seedheads and are found in more diverse plant communities rather than dense monocultures.

Being able to tell the difference is essential for proper reporting and control. Think you’ve found invasive phragmites? Snap a photo and report it to EDDMapS.org.
